Farmall a transmission knock

Hi guys I'm new the group. My name is Tyler and I have a 47 farmall a that's knocking in a few gears. Is this normal or something that needs to be looked into? It knocks in 2nd and 3rd I haven't tried 4th due to lack of space and chains on the tires. I thought it might be the chains but it doesn't look like they could come into contact with anything. Any thoughts or opinions? [/b]

Broken oil slinger in the trans Aluminum and looks like a gear but oils the shafte on stationary work. Jim

Will it be ok to run in first to plow a small driveway or should I park it until spring when I plan on restoring it? I plan on doing a working restoration in the spring breaks, fluids, filters and the like.

Thanks for the quick reply Tyler.

There is no sure way to assess the oil slinger without pulling the cover 9not a bad job) if it is, it can be taken out in piecves
and left out if no stationary service is encountered. If you make it right, it must be disassembled to fix it. But it might not
be that oil slinger that causes the problem. Open and look. If pieces break off and get between gears really bad expenses will
happen. Jim

Have you checked the fluid level? We had a B out at Farmamerica that was doing strange things in the rear end. When they took the cover off it was bone dry inside! Added some gear oil and no further problems.

Maybe a tooth is off a gear. I have a transmission apart in the shop that had a tooth off a gear. It’s a three speed and knocked lightly in 1st and 3rd but knocked louder in 2nd. The gear that took the load in second gear had the missing tooth.

I haven't been able to check the fluid level yet. It only does it in second and 3rd I haven't been able to test it in forth. Today when I went to plow it didn't want to move I put it in first and it would just bug down and stall the same with reverse and 2nd but it finally broke loose and started moving maybe its low on fluid and water in the transmission making the knock?

Before I replaced all of the old leather seals on my 49 C, it leaked pretty bad and I had to top off the tranny oil level pretty often.

I would first drain it and fill it. Common for water to build up in the tranny case as it is cast iron and will sweat inside.

Sounds like it could have water in the oil and has froze. Assuming it is snow that you are trying to plow.
Probably best to get it inside, drain and change the oil and remove the trans cover as Jim suggested in order to see what you have going on in there.
good luck
Dennis

Yes snow in northeastern pa and I will have to try draining the transmission and see what I get thanks everyone for the help I appreciate it

I forgot to mention. I had a "knock" following installation of front wheel weights. I was able to associate that as the cause because it wasn't there before. But I could definately see how someone could think that noise was something in the driveline.
