Battery maintainer on hard to reach tractor

The batteries on my 86 series IH are on the long side of 14 years old now. At this point it?s a game to see how long they will last. They started it at zero the other day when I had forgotten to plug it in, so they must have a little life left in them.

On my Deere tractors I hook a maintainer or charger to the battery lug on the starter to charge or maintain both batteries. All of those are series 6 volt batteries. The IH has parallel 12 volt and there no way to get to the starter lug without making myself a muddy mess.

Can I hook the maintainer to the hot lug on the back of the alternator? I?m not talking about charging it or boosting it from there. Just something to keep the batteries fully charged if I don?t use it for a few days. When it gets really muddy I chore with the FWA machine and I bet it gets muddy when all of this thaws...

Yes you can.

I've done just that on a gas 4020 for years.

Probably NOT a bad idea to make it a point to disconnect it before starting the engine, though.

Yes, you can connect it to anything that is connected to the battery.

Wow, 14 years on a battery! That is unheard of down here in the summer heat!

here i thought i was doing something when i replaced my kubota battery the other day, it was nine years old...

I can add a 2 wire plug to my maintainer for those hard to get to battery.

Don't have pic of plug that will remove the battery clamps.

The batteries on an 86 series are dead easy to get to. Why not connect the battery maintainer directly to one of them?

You can get a pigtail which can be installed on the battery cable end bolts. Then all you have to do is dangle it out under the step and plug it in:

My maintainer has plug built into cord.

I've added end like above to many hard to
get to batteries. Make sure the exposed
metal on tractor goes to the negative.
