So today I found this 1944 battered up Farmall M for sale and I was thinking about buying it. The strange thing was it had a white grill with crome lining at the top of it. The guy who owned it said that's how it was when his dad bought it. Any idea what it means?

The grill on my farmall 300 is black. It was bent up when I got it. I
used a little heat to help straighten it. Painted the bare metal black
because that's what I had until I paint the whole thing. That was 10 years
ago. Probably just something someone did.

Quite a few Ms received the white grill treatment after the 450s were introduced. I don't have a clue about the chrome strip.

I think life has been tough on that old girl. Price would have to be cheap, or I?d pass myself. There are some pretty nice, straight, old M?s out there that
are in much nicer shape. Lots of ?customization? on that one.

I would not consider that one to be a candidate for restoration, but it looks like an owner had a reason for the other modifications. It has been useful for someone. I worked on a farm that had an International 340 Utility with about that many modifications, He used it as a bulldozer. He had a trip bucket and push down trees by hitting them high, of course he could not do anything with one when he got it to the ground

One of the few times I will somewhat agree with the correct police. If you are thinking of restoring
it ...refurbishing to your like or making it look new....this is probably not the best starter specimen.
But for use and function it looks to have a lot going for it. It looks to have a belt driven live hyd.
pump off the crankshaft. Would be great if it works. One caution, if the belt driving it goes over the
fan pulley all the force to drive the pump will be transferred across the water pump bearings. This
may cause more frequent water pump issues. Another plus is it looks like it has a Char-Lynn
power steering setup on it due to the hole in the top of the hood at the front left. The white grill is
probably as 300jk states a spruce up with the color he had on hand. And the chrome is an
accessory added off a car or fifties refrigerator. Lol. Keep us in the loop if you test drive it or buy it
as it is a very interesting tractor.

I was also going to comment about the concrete filled tires as wheel weights. On our farm in KS we had a 300 which had concrete filling the dish of the cast wheel. Apparently my grandpa took them off laid them down and poured them full. Later when my grandpa and my uncle purchased a 656 it got the same treatment. But for that tractor two inch wide steel strap bands were made to bring the concrete out near the lip of the rim the tire mounts against with a recess for the valve stem. I remember the concrete finish on the 656 was incredibly smooth. Each tractor had a large enough opening around the axle to be able to access the axle hub bolts.

definitely not factory, anybody can paint a grill white and bend some chrome around it.

I went ahead and picked it up with a Belly Mower and a Bucket for $1200. The had another M for sale that I also bought for $1000 In better shape. Also had a white grill
