Icy day today

Even I went in the ditch tonight, about a half mile from home. It wasn't because of the ice though. I just got to far to the right and I knew I was stuck 50 ft before the car came to a stop. The ice on the windshield of my truck was so thick that I used my heat gun to soften it up enough to scrap a hole in it. I had my son help me get the car out. I think he felt good helping me. We were back home 19 minutes after we left. When it is 10 degrees out, that is long enough.

Where are you located, must be a little south of me as it was closer to zero here. I drove past an suv in a field, on its side. The police scanner and the MN road reports web site were full of off road vehicles, and it never got warm enough to really melt the ice off. And it?s all black ice, you aren?t sure if it is there?s or not. Can drive along great, tap the brakes and there is no stopping traction and uh oh......

Spooner Wi. It took a little over an hour to get this truck back on the road. I think that he wasn't able to get going at a stop sign and might have tried to back up to get a run at it, but slide off the road instead, but that is just a guess.
I had shoveled some snow away from my car and then had to tug on it about six times before it started to move. I had expected that I would need to put a pair of chains on, but I got lucky.

Ashes work good for a temporary traction like that. Just spread them under the tires and where you want the tires to pull at.
Works as good as sand will.

the ashes statement may work sometime, during our cold snap i was carrying water to my sheep, put wood ash down on the ice for a better grip, it made the ice slicker then snot. who woulda thunk it.

(quoted from post at 08:46:06 02/05/19) Try ashes hot out of the stove.
When I was 16 I put bleach on my tires. Seemed to help get me moving in snow. Probably wouldn't work on ice.

The ashes have to be thick enough to not just turn to soup on the ice. As the ice melts it will get wet and slippery so more need to be added.
