MM Uni-Tractor

The Uni-Tractor was nicknamed the the "Minneapolis-Moline Motorcycle". The machine was a power unit used to drive other machinery, including the Uni-Harvester combine, the Uni-Foragor forage harvester, the Uni-Baler hay baler, and the Uni-Picker corn picker.

Taken from Tractor Data info.

They were an earlier uni that New Idea made. The Moline Uni was about 5-10 years before the New Idea ones. They would mount different harvesting pieces on them. Combines, pickers, choppers and such.

Had power steering , early use of power assist steering. They were really not that bad of a machine but priced out of most folks range.

Dad took one of those monstrosities in trade for a new CASE 600 SP combine. It had a combine attachment on it. It took me about 2 hrs. to drive the new combine to the customer. It took the rest of the day to drive that wobbly wheeled snail back to the dealership. It would only go about 6mph and you could hardly keep it steering where you wanted it to go.
Dad sold it to a local farmer who ran it a couple years and parked it. I think it is still in a hedgerow on that farm.

There where not any of them around here as Minni Mo did not have a dealership anywhere close to us. I do remember an Great Uncle had one up in MN with a corn picker on it. He complained about how heavy it was and one side was heavier than the other too. So picking earlier in the fall was out until the ground froze.

For Grandpa Love here are some pictures of Minni Unis with attachments:

This one with the corn picker has the elevator folded ahead. I guess for storage.

I had two New Idea Unis. The first two models after New Idea bought the design,a 701 with a Chevy 292 straight 6 and a 702 with a GMC V6. They seemed like a good idea, but in reality, well,I went back to pull type equipment.

The summer I worked for a seed corn company, we used the UNIs for harvesting the seed corn on the cob, was told they were sought after for this use. I think you could use a three-row narrow head, not remembering for sure.

New guys have a much larger system, painted JD green but I'm sure custom built. They run a 32 row planter as compared to our six row.

Used to be a lot of New Idea unis around N. Ill., a neighbor that does some or maybe all organic farming had two nice lookin ones setting in a corn field last fall.

Impressive machine, very nicely restored too!!!!

Which engine is that? It looks like an OHV V-engine, but not any automotive engine that I can recognize.
