saw the post about the new calf, i'm caught in the polar vortex with lambs, triplets last night at -10 12 MPH wind. couldn't believe how hard it is to get one of those little critters dried off, that fluid on them is like a thin karo syrup. they would get covered in ice and we'd hit them with the hair drier and put them on the mom, when they'd ice up we'd hit'm with the drier again. alls well with them this morning. them sure are some tough little buggers.

You guys did a great job, they likely wouldn?t have survived without you helping them. Do you have many to lamb?

i have 9 ewes lambing, 7 have lambed and have 2 to go, hopfully they can hold till tomorrow but i'm guessing today. have 14 lambs now, all seem to doing great for the conditions.

I normally don't put the buck in with my doe goats until Nov 1st which means kidding starts the last week of March. This year I have 5 or 6 does in another field that got bred but it looks like they will make it thru the cold spell before they kid 5 degrees here this AM but headed to the 60's next week.I hate Winter kidding have had some calves born the last couple weeks they are doing fine.

I?m finished lambing 81 ewes. All was good till yesterday. The lambs crowded so much to get warm( I assume) that there were 5 dead yesterday morning. We have a hot box with heat lamp for them to go under but looked like some had stayed with mamma and got laid on. They were over 2 weeks old already. That was a new one for me as I?ve never had that happen before.

it's always tough when you lose them, i lost one so far but there was something wrong with it, hair just didn't look right. had really long hair from shoulders back and something that resembled thin wool from shoulders forward. sound like you and i are both looking forward to a little warm-up to take the worry out of it.

have most of the material now to build a 20X90 shelter and a 24X60. Next year they will all be locked in the buildings anytime it is under -20 Celsius. That should make things alot nicer. Has taken me 2 years to gather material.

We don't even put the ram in until at least Thanksgiving, more likely Dec 1st. I've had too many dead lambs to waste time and effort with dead of winter lambing. There is ZERO profit in a dead lamb.
