It doesn't stop snow from drifting, it stops snow before it drifts onto the road. I use snow fencing or rows of trees for that. They slow the wind speed at the ground level so it drops the snow before it gets to the road.

The county road commission used to come out in the fall and put up snow fence in the fields where it was especially prone to drifting, but it's been a lot of years now since they did it.

I was terrified at what this was gonna be.......I was afraid spell check changed it to dike..... Lol wasn't sure why you was gonna cut a female.......

The Maine state road crews do this in the potato fields in the county to stop snow from drifting onto US Rt. 1.

Nothing new about that around here. The town regularly goes out on the west side of north-south oriented roads in the fields (with farmer's permission) and plow up 1 or more trenches with a front-end loader to trap the snow before it gets to the roads.

Years ago a old timer from church use to live in montana told me to push back snow about 40 feed from drive...pile up in row as a snow fence.. been doing that ever since works really well.. I use to use my 3020 with blade now use skid loader..can make HUGE tall snow fence. LOL

Guess back then they use to do this OR use their bales to line the field by the road..

The county does the same thing with their road graders I even saw they had they D9 cat with the v plow on out making dikes again this year again so we must have a little snow somewhere

One year our road agent plowed the drift on one side of a stretch road right over to the down wind side. It took him a few passes of backing up but there didn't used to be much traffic on the road.

Loren You must remember when the Town of Springfield had that old Lynn Tractor with a big V plow and 2 wings and they plowed in the farm fields. It also had a box like on the back with a stove in it for the workers that ran the V plow and the wings. It was a 3 man operation. One man to drive the old Lynn and two men in the box on the back to operate the plow and wings. I wonder what ever happened to that old Lynn Tractor ? .The last time I seen it was up at Crafts plowing down across that big field about 150 feet from the road. Old Scovy

hey showcrop, this is off topic but you seemed to help someone with a roosamaster injection pump diagram in the past. do you have one for a CBC pump? I have a deere 4.4L on my 69' 500A backhoe and need to reseal the pump. I have the seal kit, just don't want to tear into it without a diagram.

Its not just done in the county, DOT and some Town crews do it in many places since most have stopped putting up snow fence.

Jim, as I said the state was doing it along route one in the county. Being from Maine you must know what the county is?

DCollette, I remember sending a manual that I had downloaded to someone here once, but it turned out to be the wrong one. You should be able to find it with help from Google.

Jack, I remember it well. It ended up in the yard of a junky in W.Winfield. I can remember them spending 2 days with it trying to open up the road past Cope's back in the early 50's.

Hi showcrop,

Yes I do know where the county is. I've had to make a few day trips up there to look at things; It makes for a long day. I have worked up there, Houlton, Presque Isle, Madawaska, Fort Kent, etc., at times over the years. All together different from the lower end of the state. The practice is likely most visible as you travel RT 1 in the county as they do larger areas than most other places, but I was just saying it's not uncommon to see it being done around the state.

Jim, I used to go to western Maine snowmobiling. Rangely, and Jackman, and the Forks. In more recent years we have been trailering to East Millinocket then riding to Portage, Fort Kent, Houlton, Presque Isle Etc.
