12 volt conversion 8 n tractor

I have a question on my ford 8 n tractor. I have attempted to perform a electricl conversion. I included a photo of the instructions provided from yesterday tractor supply. As far as I can tell I followed instructions closely. A few things though that wasn?t covered. There is a negative and a positive side to coil, do I need to ground coil? Also before there was a wire hooked to distributor , does the distributor need a hot wire ran to it? I did not have a terminal block so I purchased one and hooked them up according to instructions. Did I need to do this? I also installed a ignition switch and got rid of the tago switch that was being used. There was two wires yellow and black. I hooked both up to to terminal block. Was I suppose to use black as ground instead of doing this, the reason I am asking is the resister was smoking pretty bad and so was the starter. I am thinking I should have ran both wires from terminal block to the yellow wire.

Thanks so much!

Neg side of coil connects to distributor. Smoke is never good.....something wrong somewhere! The two terminals on the terminal block are simply connected to one another via the ignition switch. Be careful relying on colors, as the tractor is about 70 years old. How many original wires do you think are still on it?

I am having some trouble reading the directions upside down. As mentioned below wire from distributor goes to - on coil. was the toggle switch before just to turn on power and you used a push button to start tractor? Does thee new switch work to start tractor or just to turn power on and off? The conversion has been covered a number of times on this site and there should be a good wiring diagram in the archives

The switch just turns on power I also installed a new starter button on the transmission cover like the original . I put the wire going to distributor on + side so I will need to change that?

O new wires left I used the new wiring harness and ran all new wires. Should I have grounded the new switch with the black wire instead of running
both to terminal block? I?m thinking that might be causing smoke.

side is power from your resistor and the - side of coil only goes to distributor.

o not ground anything on ignition switch, ever!

There are no wires to ground on an ignition system. The ignition points do provide a ground for the coil (negative side with negative ground battery). The coil should get power from the resistor. the resistor gets its power from terminal block, the block Left terminal with blue wire, should get its power from the left side of the amp meter (not the right) only thing on the right terminal should be the red medium sized wire from the solenoid. Lights should also be connected to the left side of the amp meter. The ignition key provides a connection between the terminal block connections when on. The alternator is separate, and has only one wire and it goes to the left side of the amp meter. The starter switch should only be connected to the small terminal on the solenoid. I think that starter switch grounds the solenoid to make the starter go. A certain amount of smoke will come off of the resistor when first operated, as they do get hot. Do not leave the ignition turned on with it not running

I would advise you throw that diagram out and search for JMORs diagrams for the serial number range of your tractor (early or later 8N). Just did a conversion on my early 8N and the JMOR pictograms were much easier to follow.... and no smoke!

No comment on the problem but the diagram is an example of someone trying to make a diagram startng with their computer and then finishing it up by hand. Would be much easier to supply a nicely done hand-drawn version, that's my opinion anyways. I like the rectangular ammeter, very cool
