Different type of livestock

I read where they are putting oyster beds back in the Atlantic to clean up the water and provide habitat for oysters. It appears the oyster reefs were so substantial in the old days they could not be crossed at low tide. I do like oyster stew, so bring it on and raise those little critters.

But if the oysters are cleaning up the water, and you are eating the oysters, who ends up with the dirt.......?

In Maryland there are beds leased for aquaculture of oysters, there are planted and protected beds, and there are wild beds anyone can use. Some areas are polluted and harvests are prohibited. The trend is farmed beds on leased areas.

Plants will help clean up water too. Not sure what plants will grow in saltwater. A combination of both plants and animals may be the best solution. Do some cities dump their garbage in the ocean?

We are being invaded with zebra mussels. They clean the lakes of needed plankton for the fish and then plug up every thing they can hang onto like pipes, drains, etc . A real mess.

Mark Kurlansky's book, "The Big Oyster: History on the Half Shell" details this very topic and oysters make for an amazing story. Their historical, ecologic and economic impact on the NE coast is profound. It's well worth the time to find out about it.

Guess who they lease the farmed beds from? The state. The state still controls the beds and what kind of oysters you try to grow, Crassostrea Virginica, native to the bay, are the only ones allowed, all other have to be sterile and not invasive.
