1105 Massey static timing

I recently rebuilt my 1105 and 1135. I was able to set the timing on the 1135 by the fuel pump code which was VR88. My service manual does not list the 1105 code. The code on the pump is YR73. Can anyone tell me the static timing?

Just align the pump scribe line with the adapter plate scribe line. Don't count on the square end snap ring being set in the correct spot for letter "F" anyway. There were two pumps used on the 1135, early models had no pump advance block and were timed 28 degrees BTDC. Late models with the advance were timed same as the 1105, 22 degrees if I recall.

That was never a problem, they didn't start the best cold anyway. That's why the late models had advance so they started better. JD 3010 and 4010 models also came originally with fixed phase, no advance pumps. When the 3020 and 4020 came out with advance for better cold starting RoosaMaster/Stanadyne came out with an advance housing kit to update the 10 series as well. Most owners bought it around here, but I still see some early no advance pumps in for repair too. Problem with the fixed phase pumps is if timing is set for best starting, engine will miss at high speed no load. Set the timing for best high speed running, then it will start hard. Rotary pumps with advance helped eliminate that problem, especially with constant end, variable beginning designed pumps like Stanadyne/Roosa, and CAV DPA pumps are.

The 1105 is a 1976 and the 1135 is a 1977. I set the 1135 at 30 degrees BTDC per the VR88 code. Runs perfect. The 1105 never ran right and without the code I wasn't sure where to start. I will try 22 degrees BTDC. Thank you.

Yes, Direct injected diesels START best with timing retarded. As piston is higher more compression heat is made BEFORE fuel is injected. The high speed RUNNING timing will usually be 10-15 degrees more for best performance on rotary pumps with advance. The inline pumps usually retard starting timing with a retard start notch cut on top of the plunger notch which only works at full rack travel.
