BS 5000 generator

I am able to get a Briggs and Stratton 5000 generator for free. It is brand new. Somehow the laborers cracked the case. The engine will no longer turn over. Is it worth putting a new engine in? It is the 389cc OHV model. I am unable to find the exact engine to price it out. I thought you clever folks would know. Thanks.

There will be a model, type, and code number stamped into the sheet metal, usually on the flywheel cover or a air deflector near the head, maybe on the rocker cover if OHV.

That will be a direct B&S number that should call up the correct parts for the engine itself.

The engine will be specific for generator use, it will have a taper shaft and a c face mount to center it to the generator housing.

Just poking around on the web a motor may cost the same as a new unit. saw one $700 Canadian.

Perhaps you could find a block or some other means to acquire what it might take, but you may quickly find yourself
over a barrel so to speak.

Pick it up leave it sit and sell it at the garage sale to the next dupe.

maybe 20 years from now you will find some old used up one with a bad generator for parts.

Or cut it down and power it from some other source. Belt drive it from a windmill.

Or a gang of horses on a merry go round. The options could entertain endlessly
