Which service manual brand is best?

I need to finally shell out for a service manual for my Deere 2010.

Yes, yes, I know insert jokes here, surprised you made it this long. So you haven't gotten it home yet? Should have bought the manual before the tractor..

Specifically, I want the manual so I can rebuild the clutch on the PTO. The PTO works, but I can't engage it with the engine running. Seems like the plates/discs might be frozen together based on feedback here, so my hope is there's a procedure in the manual for rebuilding the clutch so I can just redo the whole thing while I'm in there.

My question is which service manual? From what I can see online, there is the i&T brand and then what looks like copies of the Deere original. I was looking on the JenSales site.

Which is the one to get? Or maybe somebody else makes an even better one?

Many thanks.

Grouse

Maybe they've changed, but the Jensales manuals I've seen were photocopied, often copies of copies of copies, and the pictures were completely unusable. If they would just bite the bullet and digitize their
originals, they'd have a lot better product. IT manuals kind of short-cut things, but if you're an experience mechanic and know how to do common procedures without having them explained, they seem to work OK.

Keep a eye on Ebay. Try to get a original manual if you can.
All the reprint everything, in my opinion, leave something to be desired.

Look on ebay or other sources for a GENUINE factory DEERE tech manual.

The genuine manuals from "back in the day" had large fold-out pages of electrical, hydraulic, and other drawings IN COLOR.

Copies in black and white make it MUCH harder to follow the diagrams and match the "colors" shown in the legend to the corresponding lines in the drawings, and the large drawings may be reduced to a singe page, or split on a couple of pages, unlike the nice glossy paper foldouts in the originals.

NOT sure how the large color pages are rendered if you buy a current new copy from Mother DEERE, as they are "print on demand", and I haven't bought one, yet, as I've been able to find "originals".

And (heads up), when you are ready to lift off the rockshaft cover, be SURE to remove to "hidden" bolts holding the supply line to the rockshaft, or bad things will happen!

I get along fine with I&T manuals although I do find an occasional error and sometimes they're a little vague. I got an I&T Cockshutt manual from Jensales because they are out of print and was really disappointed. It's just a photocopy and the quality was poor. I emailed them about it and all I got was "OK, sent it back for a refund". They even said it was one of their most popular. I kept it because I needed the information but I will only order from them if I can't find it anywhere else. They have a huge offering so I think they could do better on printing for that volume.

A borrowed I & T manual saved me lots of grief by pointing out those hidden bolts ! I had to go into one to replace the roll pin on the engagement lever that shears off.
I say at the very least get an I & T manual and even better yet also get a factory Deere manual too.

I worked on a 2010 ONCE. Aftermarket service manuals didn't help me any. One of the issues with this tractor was the PTO. With the OEM service manual in hand, I was able to make the adjustments on the PTO and got it to work properly. And "properly" is quite the conundrum with that nightmare. If I recall correctly, one swipe of the lever, and you are disengaging the clutch, sliding a splined shaft coupler together, and re-engaging the clutch!

Deere still sells service manuals.

The 2010 is shares some design with the 1010, has a lot of design that is unique to only 2010's, and it has almost nothing in common with the larger 3010 and 4010 tractors. Check how many models the I&T manual covers. A small generic manual for 1010, 2010, 3010 and 4010 tractors and maybe the 20 series too may not have a great deal of information specific to the 2010.

These are factory reprints . I&t manuals are ok for
specifications and there?s a little bit of information in
them but they leave a lot to be desired they leave a
lot of information out the whole book is as many
pages as the index on a factory manual . I have the
i&t and also the factory manual I bought the i&t after
my set factory manuals got stolen

Check out John Deere Technical Information Store to see the manuals available for 2010s (2000 series). It takes a little scrolling down the list to find them. It appears there are two service manuals based on serial numbers (SM2035 or SM2036 depending on the tractor).

Search Gerard Arthus – John Deere Company Manual Collection. There is a copy of the SM2035 manual there, you can get free. Not a top quality scan, but up to you if it will work for you.

If you don't have an operator's manual you might want to get one of those as well.

Not only the orignal, reprint or after market, they all leave something to be desired. Just one picture or one sentance that is in one but not in the other might be just what you need. Cannot have to many different versions. Both the factory and IT&T when they update manuals drop some info to add other and what is droped just might be what you need. Even older catalogs from companys that have sold parts just might have the info you are looking for.

I will second the disappointment with Jensales manuals. I have a couple, pages are left out, in the wrong place and the pictures are totally useless. Keep watching e bay for original manuals and don't balk at the prices, originals are worth the extra money. My 2 cents worth. Chris

John Deere tech manuals are second to none on the older stuff. Can't comment on newer versions as I
haven't seen one. The IT manual is usually very brief but usually sufficient. I would look on EBay , there
is usually a good amount of manuals there.

The new Deere reprints are junk the cover has a hole in it there tears and then the next thing the whole book falls apart because the cover is ripped off of it

There is nothing in an i&t that isn?t in the factory
manuals. This picture shows the i&t on top of the
factory manual the i&t covers the 3010 3020 4010
4020 4320 4520 and 4620 5010 5020 and the 6030
early and late serial numbers . The factory manual
covers the 3010 and 3020 early serial number only

Spend the dollars and buy a factory JD book. I have purchased
both of those you mentioned. Pages are missing or out of place,
pictures are black. Don't waste your dollars on an aftermarket
book.
