block heater

am looking at installing a block heater or hose heater on my L3400 kubota, the one installs in the block and is rated at 400 watts, the one for the radiator hose is rated 600 watts. both seem a little small but it's been years since i had one. the block heater at 400 watts is a real simple install, do you think it will do the job ??

It will work. A couple pieces of card board to keep a little wind off of the engine wo=ill double its effectiveness (unless it is inside) Jim

They work very well as they are heating the antifreeze directly in the block and the heat transfer to the cylinder head quickly. Even in sub zero weather they will heat the engine enough in a half hour or so.

Either one will work just fine because they heat the coolant so in turn the whole engine get warm. The only advantage to the 600 watt over the 400 watt is the time it takes to heat it up to where it will start. 600 watt will do it in less time

The 600 watt will take the same time to heat as the 400 since it is in the radiator hose. The 400 in the block will heat the area more effectively. Those lower rad hose heaters need to be in a location that is not flat to work best. Even tells that in the instructions. Been using both types for over 30 years.

I would only use a hose heater if there was no option for a block heater. The block heater is more efficient due to better heat disbursement.

Yes have several customers that have the in block version.. easier to install and no larger than that engine is it works fine.

I've put the radiator hose heater in 3 different Kubotas and never had any problem. I would plug them in about a hour before I use them. Although I've had good luck with cold starts in my kubotas without a heater. I always figured if they leaked or something the worse case scenario I would just have to get a new hose to fix the problem. I've seen some off those block heaters leaking a little although the majority of the people on here seem to like the block heaters better.
