601 WORKMASTER STARTING PROBLEM

My dad's tractor was converted to 12v., has electronic ignition, new plugs , even rebuilt the carb. but it is very hard to start acting like it is flooded, but eventually starts. I have figured out that when I'm done with the tractor if I turn off the gas valve on the gas tank and when use again turn back on that it will crank right up,,,,no problems,,,Does anybody have any solution to this problem?

it sounds like gas must be leaking into the carburetor when sitting with the fuel turned on. A common problem I see is not getting the seat tight enough to seal properly. It could also be a small piece of dirt on the needle valve causing it not to seal properly.

Well you're supposed to turn off the gas valve, so I guess there isn't a problem. What's happening is gas is leaking past the needle valve, causing a flooding condition when it sits. But needle is apparently working OK when running, so its a very slight leak, and may be more trouble than its worth to fix.

Just like Mutt and Jeff says. I have them on three of my gas tractors. I just hooked them to the coil so they open when I turn on the ignition switch.

On all my gas tractors I shut off gas at
tank, and run until carb is dry. When
starting I open fuel for a couple
minutes to fill carb back up. Starts
much easier. Solves gummed up carb
problems, stops small leaks from
draining tank over time. Also have clip
lead that I use to bypass ballast
resistor on coil when starting. Provides
hotter spark when starter is trying to
bring system voltage. (12 volt
conversions with 6 volt starter.)
