Dreams from past

My dad has been gone for several years, but I still have dreams about being with him, along with others from my past. My life was under a lot of stress during the time he was ill, and up until just lately due to business. I am in process of selling part of my business, which is reducing my stress dramatically. I enjoyed having them in my dreams, but found that when I was stressed the dreams were too with a lot of arguing. Now that my life is more stable, I have had really enjoyable dreams with them in it.

Last night was interesting. My dad had collected some pedal tractor parts and an engine from a JD L. The L engine popped right off when I tried to start it, even after sitting for who knows how long. I know dreams do not make sense, but I was bound and determined that the engine was for a singer sowing machine, so I was going to restore one and put the engine on it. My dad was super calm and happy.

I know it is not real, but I enjoy being with him, even if in a dream.

My father passed 11/06/1973 at 46 years old. I was 16, not a day goes by that are paths
don't cross & countless dreams I've had with him. In real life my father was blinded from
a dynamite explosion in 1957, 2 months be for I was born in Many of my dreams my father has
his sight, I never knew him to have this, they are pleasant dreams for me. I have always felt
if I kept him close to me, he lives on through me, many have told me that I am a chip off the old
block, I take that as a Honor.

I am often visited in dreamland by my late parents, and in-laws too. Dreams have always been pleasant, we had good relationships in life, so I wouldn?t expect much else. Only thing that puzzles me about dreams, while we have been on this farm now 15 years. My dreams always take place back on our first farm. Our parents were gone before we bought this place, but there are no rules in dreamland. I would think my subconscious would blend past with present, but not so.

I always make a point when I get back to where I grew up to visit cemeteries where my parents, grand parents are buried. Usually get there a couple of time a year. Always makes me think back to the days when I was growing up on a small dairy farm and the things we did to keep it going and what life was like growing up. There is only one thing that worries me about getting old - developing some sort of dementia where those memories are lost. Seems like a cruel way to die - you spend a life time having memories and die with them all gone.

I know what you mean. Dad passed away in 07. We milked cows twice a day and farmed together. It would be pretty strange not to dream about him after all that. Seems like about once a month I still have dreams about us milking cows. Of course the whole "milking cows" part is more like a nightmare. lol

Well, there was a period in the 80s that was a total nightmare, but we made good money through the 90s. The income that my Social Security statement shows I paid taxes on through those years is proof of that. lol

I was thinking of now,,like Bruce said a farmer sent a nice calf to the sale,,and they send him a bill for handling charge,,its really a sad thing to hear

I remember a time when you didn't want to leave your pickup unattended while you were consigning calves. If you did, when you came back, you were likely to have more calves in there than you had when you went in.

I not only dream about my father who died in 1982, but also a good friend who owned a garage and helped me with my tractors. I have to sleep with a CPAP mask and it seems as if I dream more since I started using it.

I sometimes dream about dad. They are usually very realistic dreams, just normal things happening, and they are typically neutral or pleasant.

Sadly most of my memories growing up with dad were not pleasant.

Got to thinking, mom is still alive, she was much more involved in my upbringing than dad, but I can't recall ever having a dream involving her! Strange...

I was engaged briefly to a different gal, "Charlotte", before I met my wife. After Charlotte and I were engaged, it became painfully obvious that she simply wasn't ready for marriage. Who knows, maybe I wasn't either. Anyway, we called the engagement off amicably and eventually went our separate ways.

It turned out Charlotte died of natural causes relatively young without ever marrying. She always wore a distinctive perfume, and many times since she died I've gotten a whiff of that same perfume. So, is her spirit following me around?

Once when I had a close call with a mean dog, the dog suddenly backed down. About then, I got a strong smell of Charlotte's perfume. I guess you can make what you want of that situation.

I dream from time to time when I was in a secured examination room, about to write my first Power Engineering Examination. Six hours was allotted. Once completed you were to rise and leave the room.

I was the last student, left the room at 5 hrs 55 minutes.

Dreams are real and they DO make sense in that when your brain has nothing better to do at night, your brain cortex spends time shuffling through your hippocampus where long term memory is stored. Long term memory is thought to be less like a series of movies where whole events are stored and more like a photo album with individual snapshots that the brain can use to reconstruct whole memories.

Your brain's limbic system is also heavily involved during dreams and since the limbic system is the part of your brain that handles emotions, this explains why dreams are often either driven by emotional events or contain emotionally meaningful content.

While you're dreaming, the brain is reorganizing both short and long term memories to make part truth part fiction movies and the formation of these dreams is guided by and spiced with emotional undercurrents from real life.

Given the life situation you described, the "meaning" of your dream is obvious. Your parents represent emotions related to safety, security, and stability. Clearly, the dream's mechanical content represents your emotions that surround a problem in your life that has been or is about to be solved, hence your confidence the engine would fit.

The ol' brainbox is like the generator back at the power station, it's constantly turning regardless of how much electricity we're using at the present time.

I am often surprised at topics on this thread but this one is a real surprise. Glad to hear so many of you describe your dream experiences. Have wondered whether it is common with other folks.

My Dad is gone 30 years now and I frequently dream about him. Always pleasant and wish they would last longer. Biggest regret in my life is failing to adequately thank him before he left. Never talked about this to anyone other than my wife.

Thanks to all of you.

That reminds me of an idea I had a few years back. I have a lot of stuff I accumulated over the years and I am just too lazy to gather it all up and take it to charity. So I figure when I head out on garage sale day I will take a couple items with me. I carry one up to a sale, wait until nobody is looking, and leave it on their table. They can either sell it or take it with THEIR stuff to charity. I call it the inverse garage sale. My wife threatened to leave me if I was caught. Some people have no sense of adventure!

I often dream of my Mom and Dad also. I would say at least once a week. The brain is a strange thing how it works. I have very strange dreams while I am ill, (flu). I have been told I will keep calling out for my Mom. God I do miss my folks. It is very easy for me to get teary eyed just thinking of them. I am a guy who has been told has zero feelings, but Mom and Dad that's different. It is always nice to dream of your folks, at least for a hour or two you are with them again. Al

Don't do that. You might have the same dream that I have some day and want to be a flea market vendor, just spending your days sitting in the shade selling junk and lying to strangers. What'll you have to sell if you give away all your inventory now? LOL

Sounds like Sheldon when he had all the cats. He sat in the park with a sign that said "Cat's $20" Then he was handing kids each a cat and a $20 bill. lol

I have some pertly violent, physical dreams I don't think my dad would want to be in them... The last one not long ago I gave the dresser in my bed room my best billy jack move... It bruised my food bad it took quite awhile for it to heal...

(quoted from post at 14:37:43 01/16/19) Sounds like Sheldon when he had all the cats....

Ok, I was just waiting for someone to bring up cats. THANK YOU.
A cat I recently adopted who'd been left behind in an empty apartment sleeps deeply and has vivid dreams, I'm sure. With his eyes twitching, and whiskers and mouth moving and occasionally a paw moving in his sleep--I'll watch for a little bit until he sits bolt upright, looks around, like--oh it was just a dream. Our pets can let us know just about anything that's on their mind--but they can't tell us what they dream.

For my dreams, they are triggered by current things going on, but sometimes mom appears. Been gone for over 30 years.

My best friend was a cable tv tech and later a system manager. Too many days and nights of hanging on poles in below zero or Hades hot or lightning & rainstorm. He?s been retired a couple of yrs now after 40 yrs in it and he still gets nightmare when a thunderstorm comes through at night when he?s asleep.

I call mine a nightmare.

Funny you should go there. We took in a friend who was dying of Lou Gehrig's disease. Her last afternoon before she passed, she acted like her mind was coming unraveled,in and out of lucidity. She was talking to people. My wife asked her who she was talking to and she named off several people who had passed on,including my dad.

What was it that Barney Fife read in that book of mountain folklore? Something about if you put a willow chip under a dogs head while he's sleeping then put it under your pillow, you'll have the same dream the dog had? Maybe you'll have to try that with the cat. LOL

My dreaming consists mostly of daydreaming of people and times past. Lots of fond memories of my deceased father, uncles, and neighbors. These all left voids in my heart that the oncoming generation can't fill. I do love the young people, but my peers had simple ways of doing things and dealing with issues, as well as their special ways of conversing. They had their ways of getting their work done and enjoying and appreciating their lot in life. I grew up in a farm life with lots of good and lean times, but my father and uncles never complained about rising early every day and working the hours that go along with the farm life.

I have a re-occuring dream where I'm really chasing something. When I'm running at my absolute fastest, my front legs are doing most of the work. At my top speed my head cracks into the bed headboard and I awaken. wolf.

David, I understand your thoughts, I lost my Dad, almost 18 years ago. We were in business, and also farmed together, enjoyed those times. Went on to sell my company years later and realized how many old family times I started thinking about, all this that was important to shaping my life. I so enjoy having both him and my Mother in my thoughts, and wonderful sunrises and sunsets...

My dreams are far and few between. When j have them they are very vivid and I never get to the end, it's like a book with the last chapter torn out.

The last one was of someone tearing up my Christmas tree patch, I ran out of my bedroom and down the stairs to stop them but I couldn't get out of the house there were rooms I had never been in and then a Chinese chef throwing pots and pans at me. That is the time I woke up.

It is bizarre.

I did just that. Taking a working, clean Microwave oven to the DAV to donate but they were closed. Passed a garage sale being set up and we stopped and told the lady she could have it to sell or use if she wanted, along with the owner's manual. She actually asked how much WE wanted and was so happy when we said no charge-we were giving it to charity. A good day for us both.

Apparently, ones mind filters things out at night, and I have experienced that based on things I recall happening that day or very recently. A lot them fade away and you don't remember them.

The vivid and bizarre content of mine are just hard to comprehend at times, just unreal. Used to have some that were me fighting my way out of a situation that in reality you would not likely get out of. What interested me in your post was the Chinese chef and the pans, out of nowhere the strangest things occur that have nothing to do with what preceded it. Same thing happens to me, but exponentially weird, odd, crazy beyond belief.

Mine are epic sometimes and may continue the next night. My imagination runs wild beyond comprehension, I've never understood it either. From epic battles to literally being able to fly and the details of that were incredible, like it was real, and happened numerous times. All I had to do was focus and concentrate on lifting off and it would happen, I would be flying around like it was nothing. No hallucinating kinds of drugs involved, just the darned silly imagination creating the strangest things.

The worst of the nightmares I could recall was due from a tragic experience having been near one of the events that happened on 9-11, eventually I was able to overcome it for good. Those were horrible recurring dreams I never thought possible. All other dreams were really interesting to say the least, nothing bad in them that stands out either.
