Radiator Hoses

When I was young I could take colder weather. Now that i hit 70 my hands will last 20 seconds without gloves. I enjoy your videos keep on posting

Rusty .... so some flatheads had two lowers and two uppers while others had one of each, is that correct? Somehow I remember two of each on a friends old jalopy back in high school.

Thanks Wayne. I plan to make a few more videos if I don't run out of material. I don't handle the cold like I used to when young but I guess I find ways to deal with it. Dress up with more layers. Add a little supplementary heat. That heater you saw me using in the video sure puts it out but I don't like to run it too long in a closed in building burning winter diesel fuel. I don't notice the smell but theres got to be a little carbon monoxide produced even so.

All the Ford flathead v-8s had 2 uppers and 2 lowers. And each side had its own water pump. The water jackets in the 2 sides of the engine are separate, they do not connect. The radiator is the only place where the water from each side comes together.

Rusty, I always enjoy your videos. The lower hoses on my 50 Ford pickup are just straight pieces but I suppose the radiator sets a little higher in relation to the engine than in your car. If you recall, a couple weeks ago I posted that mine overheated on its maiden voyage after being totally rebuilt. I think the problem was a faulty new thermostat. I took them both out and that seems to have corrected the problem. I might put them in a pan of water and heat them up to see if they open properly. Keep the videos coming! ADB

Thanks for that info ABD ...... so if one was ordering hoses, there would be a left side kit and a right side kit. Are they both the same or maybe mirror images of each other?

The hoses are identical side to side. The water pumps are mirror images of each other. The bottom hoses on mine are just straight from the rad to the water pump. The upper hoses come straight up out of the head - toward the front of the head on the newer flatheads and out of the center of the heads on the older ones. They then use a curved hose or a - straight hose - curved tube - straight hose - to connect to the upper rad ports. Thermostats are housed in the ports where coolant leaves the head one on each side. More complicated on the outside of the engine but less complicated on the inside.

Yes, both upper, and both lower rad hoses (on a flathead V8) are identical. Lowers are bigger diameter. You can make it work with straight hoses on the lower but the molded ones are easier to install and easier on the radiator outlets. The rad outlets angle up towards the water pumps so that bend in the hose makes it an easier fit. You can see the Gates part number on mine in the video I think. Otherwise I can get you the number from my order to Rock auto.
