Following the discussion from laSt nite about favorite sweet corn. My question is can you plantsweet corn, rr, or super sweet near or in same field with field corn, using an earlier varity, toget it silking before the field corn, to aviod cross pollination?
 
I have planted it next to field corn on the same days because sweet corn will pollinate first. For later planting I move away from field corn.

I've never planted the super sweet varieties before, so in doing some research on what varieties I'd be interested in, ran across this:

It turns out the sh in sh2 stands for shrunken.

Link above shows time lapse germination. Point being, the sh2 (super sweets) seem to have fragile seeds, which don't do well in cool temps......which means any notion of planting it "early" to get ahead of field corn may flop.

So.....since I will be making about 4 to 6 staggered plantings at 2 week intervals to stagger/extend harvest times.......my plan is to plant the se types early and hold off on the sh2 (super sweets) until the last plantings, far after there will be any issues with cross pollination with field corn. By then soil temps will have warmed to the point I'll get my best germination......I hope.
 
It will work just fine. My sweet corn is planted in the end rows of a corn field every year and we end up with more sweet corn than we know what to do with, protected by an electric fence of course. Years ago when I was young and maybe a little dangerous I planted a sweet corn patch in the middle of an 80 field of field corn to hide it from the coons. It was 1/4 mile from each end and 1/8 mile in from the sides. The coons still found it.
