Behlen power steering/ JD A

I?ve got a Behlen power steering unit for my John Deere A. The unit has a pump (see picture). My John Deere A has the John Deere governor driven pump. So what I?m wondering is can I eliminate the Behlen pump, and go from the JD pump to the power steering torque converter, from the torque converter to the Power-Trol hydraulics, and from the Power-Trol back to the pump. Is there any problem with that?
Thanks.

I wouldn't think the return side of the Behlen unit is designed for "power beyond" use, and I would expect bad things to happen if the return from the unit couldn't flow freely back to the reservoir.

That looks more like my CharLynn unit than my Behlen on my UBs. My Behlen uses my only hyd. Pump, the hose goes from the pump to the Behlen to the hyd. control box under the LP tank, then returns to the pump. The CharLynn has a separate pump (looks like an automotive pump w/res.) ran off a second belt off the back of the fan pulley.

I agree with Bob can not or will not be satisfied doing it that way. They do make a priority steering valve. You mount that valve after your pump then take you steering pressure off the valve. It gives priority to the steering then the other side of the valve would feed the lift circuit . Surplus Hydraulics has them. Separate belt powered pump would be better.

I have one on my 51 A . I use a old saganaw power steering pump driven of the fan belt. I can steer it with one finger with the loader full of wet snow. I wish I had a pump like yours. you can do what you want but it will take a prority valve. Bob

I did that on a 60. I cut the pressure line from the pump, threaded it,put a half inch black steel fitting on each end after taking a short section out. I brazed the fittings on after screwing them on since the line is so thin and the threads weren't very deep. I ran a hose to the steering unit from the pump side of the line and ran another hose back from the return on the unit and back to the pressure line. Only drawback was that if I used the remotes while I was turning,it would lock the steering wheel up.

That set up should work on an A with live power and look very clean on the tractor. My only concern would be if the power-trol has enough oil capacity to run the pump. I agree there would not be enough to turn and raise the rock shaft at the same time. But I wouldn't want it to power steering to stop half way through a turn.

We used it mostly for raking hay and pulling wagons,so it wasn't a problem very often, but I used it on the flail chopper to chop feed for the cows now and again, and that's when I found out about the steering locking up problem. I cut that line on my 730 diesel too,and ran a hose to and from an open center two spool valve so I had triple remotes on it. That one didn't bother the steering of course since it had factory PS.

I have the setup that you picture, on my 1941 "A". It works very well. Don't know what your "John Deere governor driven pump" looks like, but if it sits between your governor and your mag, could you "stack" the Behlen pump between your John Deere pump, and your mag?
