My problems returned no power runs terrible when it warms up. In my previous post a couple people mentioned plugged cat. It has two cats one for each side all one piece. Lucky me. I felt the pipe into one cat. It was very hot real quick. Coming out of the cat cool to the touch. The cat got hot, still the exit end of cat I could still hold it. That may be my problem. Will so a few more checks. Thanks for your input. Stan

You can confirm a bad cat by loosening it. My Taurus clogged up this past summer. It has the two coming down on both sides connected to make a y. There is a third cat where the y connects. I broke it loose there to confirm. One of the uppers is coming apart and stopped up the lower.

Do check your tail pipe. Guy at work years ago had someone stuff a potato in his. Dad had a field rat build a bed in his years ago.

37chief,

I do not know your truck, but if it has oxygen sensor before and after the cat, remove the upstream one to allow a freer flow of exhaust.

May be a bit noisy, bbut it is sometimes easier to access the exhaust right there.

Likely, if the "cat" is "bad" it's failed/fouled because of engine misfires, oil burning, or coolant leaks that have fouled the catalyst.

NO use to consider the "cat" as the root problem and $$$$ replace it without figuring out what's wrong ahead of it, IMHO.

Also, once you get the REAL issue fixed, and drive it like you stole it, the "cat" may burn clean and not need to be $$$$ replaced, IMHO.

Well, I wouldn't like to contravene any laws, BUT, I had a similar problem, by taking my unit to my friendly mechanic/muffler shop and have them eliminate the 'cat' and the sensors (just unhooked them) - solved. HTH P.S. they are mostly BS anyway.

Infrared thermometers help alot with finding exh restrictions, sometimes they can be used to help pinpoint cylinder misfires too.
Anyway since this engine has individual catalytic converters on each bank you can use the thermometer to compare temps on each side. There is a small heat reduction between inlet/outlet, but nothing significant.
