4020 vs early 4430 rear end / differential

Is their any problems wrong with the two pinion set up in either of these tractor. Have heard a lot of negative reviews towards John Deere differential . And how would one go if you are putting different size differential in say like a 4 or 3 pinion.

I have never ever had a difffrential problem In a 4020 4320 and 4430 and I abused them pretty hard in my younger days kinda sounds like the whole cab bashing story we had the other day . This has been my experience I?m sure someone once knew someone?s uncles cousins sister in-laws brothers mother who put in 3 differentials in 20 acres will come a long to tell you different

There was a factory update on the early 4430s. I had a 1974 model, which had the lighter version.

The 4320 had a rear end problem if it was turned up to 180 hp. Something comes loose in a planetary, catches in the bull gear and goes out the bottom of the axle housing. I was driving a 4320 for a farmer when that happened. Heard a crunch, stopped got out and saw oil draining out and running down the corn rows. A neighbor had the same thing happen with his turned way up 4320. That is what I would consider extreme abuse though. Good testament to that little ol 404 though. It keeps on running when turned way up past factory HP.

When I worked at Deere dealer, I replaced a differential case in a 4440. It broke the bearing support off just like the IH tractors did and the new one was a improved version. I don't remember how much internal parts I replaced in the differential and weather it was a two or three or four pinion spider gear setup. Horse power was not set up from factory as far as I know and owner was older gentleman not interested in the max.

There were a few problems with 4320's and 4430's. Most had the hp really turned up and were running duals that did a good bit of spinning. Liquid manure tankers were known to do that. Neighbor had it happen to his 4020 but it was used hard on lots of acres. It really was not a weakness but something that showed up sometimes when they were abused.Tom

I personally know of anyone that has had an issue with the differentials in any of those models. But as far as the 4430's go, the factory must have felt they were a weakness and it think s/n 38000 was the break for the updated differential. I would think if it's lasted this long it must be OK unless you are building a pulling tractor and that is a whole different story.

I need to proof read better. I meant to say I don't know anyone that has had an issue with those differentials.

I used to work for a guy who ran all JD's and his 4430 started to get metal shavings in the hydraulic oil, after about 6 months he had to trade it off for a 4640.

what was the deal about not shifting back and forth fromone gear to the pther on the quad range models. This was in the Aand B section. I was plowing for a guy with an 8440 or 60 told me not to keep switching from one to the other on the lever. It would be a problem inside transmission. He had worked for one of the local dealers for a while.
