Online sales tax questions and thoughts exemptions

The thread about Gurneys got me thinking!! WHAT ABOUT THE SALES TAX EXEMPT NUMBERS AND STATES WHERE AGRICULTURE IS EXEMPT??? How will this be handled? I know in some cases you have to file papers with the state to get your money back. I have also seen some outfits refuse sales tax cards. Next what about resale numbers like stores or shops have?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't the tax is supposed to be remitted back to your local taxing authority, using the same rates and rules as if you bought it locally?

Must make for a HE77 of a nuisance for the out-of state seller, having to have the tax tables for dozens, even HUNDREDS of individual jurisdictions, and to remit funds to so many places, I'm sure.

Yes it is but this is nothing new. It?s just new to online sales. My company contracts with utility companies in multiple states and jurisdictions within the states. The rates we pay depend not only on which jurisdiction we are in (sometimes multiple jurisdictions on the same project) but what and who we sell to. Some jurisdictions it?s on everything, some materials only, different rate if it?s a capitalized vs expensed (still talking sales tax) some no tax at all on labor if the owner provides the materials, etc. Dont believe anybody ever said that any kind of tax would be easy to figure out.

There is an organization that coordinates all that for participating retailers and states.
It's done with computers. Big computers. It costs a small percentage of the tax revenue.
