Twelfth Night

For most of you today is the day your Christmas decorations have to be down.

But for some of us it is a little different.
It is Twelfth Night.
The night that marks the coming of the Epiphany.
When the 3 wise men presented gifts to the baby Jesus.

You can celebrate it with a twelfth night cake or what we call king cake today.
From Epiphany (Jan 6th) to fat Tuesday (day before ash Wednesday) is the carnival season or what you may know as Mardi Gras.

And so while most of you thought Mardi Gras was just throwing beads and drinking alcohol you can now see it has its roots in religion.

Got my cake ready.
As you can see because of insurance they no longer put the baby in the cake.

Traditional is just a bread type cake where all the flavoring is in the topping.

Starting in the late 80's they started putting filling in it.
About like a jelly donut.
You can get all kinds of flavors with cream cheese being the most popular.

My kids and wife like the filled so if I want a traditional style I have to buy it myself.

I appreciate your view on the 12 days and the Epiphany John.
While my up-bringing may not align, yours sure beats the
common "it's all about the presents" mentality. Thank you!

seen on wlox the other night where a place in Picayune is making 2300 king cakes a day, that's a lot of cake lol

(quoted from post at 21:12:40 01/05/19) For most of you today is the day your Christmas decorations have to be down.

Hmm...guess we never got that memo.

They don't HAVE to be down--because mine aren't either. In fact, my lights are still turned on--and will be for 10 more days.

The one time I was in New Orleans comming home the counter at the airport had a King Cake. I got a little slice. You bet, I got the little baby Jesus. Trouble is YOU are supposed to bring a cake the next time. That was 1990. Oh well.

A bad a piece of cake is still cake 🎂 I?d like to try a piece but that frosting is a little unsettling . More important than the cake is the reason for it I really like that story . I read the story of the birth of Christ the night before Christmas

My ex mother in law was a great lady loved her to death but she was a pretty bad cook, she made a cake that looked like that for us.It was so hard we couldn't do anything with it,wife threw it out to the dog he carried it around for a couple months even he couldn't eat it but he loved to play with it(LOL)

While more expensive you can have fed ex bring one right to your door like hundreds of others do each day.
Only differance is your cake will come bare with the sugar toppings in bags.
Spread the glaze on the cake; cover with the colored sugar; and enjoy a taste of Mardi Gras anywhere.

I spent 20 years travelling from Memphis to South Louisiana to work in the oil patch. I loved the people there. I loved the accents and the phrases. I loved the traditions. I loved the crawfish, the Hubigs pies, Community coffee. The 80 degree weather in January. But, the heat, humidity, and rain every afternoon (seemingly) in the summer was tough to get used to.

Hubig Pie
Nothing but history and memories left to that name.

While Katrina halted production for a while and changed some of the flavors or selections it was ultimately a fire that destroyed the factory that did them in.
Some of the co-owners (kids and grandkids) wanted to rebuild but others just decided to take the insurance money and run.

Another company started baking their version of the pie to try and fill the void but it is not the same.
The new pies are baked where as the orginal hubig pie was fried in lard.

(quoted from post at 00:38:44 01/06/19) While your belief is most likely rooted in the different calendars when they went from March something being news years to Jan 1 being new years it would be interesting to hear why you think Christmas season goes on for 10 more days.

If this was addressed to me, the answer to your question is in the following post I made in a different thread on Dec. 27:

PostPosted: Thu Dec 27, 2018 9:25 am Post subject: Re: Today's Funny

"This sort of ties in with the thread about Christmas music. People turn their lights on at Thanksgiving or before, but then can't even leave them on through New Year's.
I turn on my lights on Dec. 15 and leave them on till Jan. 15. That's 10 days before Christmas till two weeks after New Year's. They're still on for only a month like everyone else's; it's just a different month!
I feel that Christmas should be at the center of the celebration, not at the end!"

Hope that helps.
