Doctor Pol and Weidman, Michigan

Now and then I watch the TV program "The Incredible Dr. Pol" on National Geographic TV. Interesting show and I wonder if anyone lives in his area that his practice encompasses? Seems like a pretty laid back character and would be reliable and easy to get along with, along with his staff.

RayP(Mi) has been on the show twice. Several others on here live within his coverage area. The orchard where he treats the exotic animals is about 8 miles north of me,but I use a different clinic to the south of me. My oldest son's girlfriend's aunt owns the vet clinic here in town. Dr Sandra, who was on the first few seasons works here for her now.

I've heard from some of his clients that he's kind of short tempered and belligerent,I don't know, but I can see it in him that it could very well be true.

really randy you don't the man from a bale of hay why would you throw him under the bus without any interactions, seems petty

And you don't know me from a bale of hay,but you like to jump me whenever you get a chance. I just said that I've heard that from some of his clients, which I have, and I doubt that you have, and I stated my opinion that I can kind of see it sometimes in the show.

Have a nice day.

I've watched it a few times and he seems like he can get a bit cranky and pretty straightforward at times. I figured it was the nature of the business he has to deal with. The guy is always busy and dealing with sick and injured animals and I'm sure that alone could make a guy short tempered at times.

and now your making up lies about me , show me the last post I ever said anything personal about you .

Anybody on hear ever heard of Dr. Paul Dettloff?. He practices around Arcadia, Wisc. His writings about the vet practice are very good. Also has a web site.

I did take a three day clinic at DR. Pauls In Wisconsin a few years back. I did learn a ton about treating cattle on my own farm. Dr Paul is class act, Very nice guy who will take time and talk with anyone. I did hear he retired this last summer. Al

Davpal ..... the only thing that could be worse than dealing with sick and injured animals would be dealing with sick and injured people. Especially if they showed up wearing YT t-shirts and caps ..... ha, then you'd be in BIG trouble !!!

I have watched the show several times. I do not know the man personally but I can see where he might get a little testy at times and I cannot blame him. A couple of examples; 1) When you see some of when you see a dog or cat brought in that has had an injury or sore that has been neglected for so long that it is filled with infection and pain, then they expect him to fix it. 2) He goes out to a farm to look at a large animal, horse, cow, etc. and the farmer does not have the basic facilities to control the animals, a chute, dry barn, etc. I have seen several cases where they are chasing cows in open pastures, trying to work in knee deep mud, rain, etc. These situations make it time consuming, difficult & unsafe for him and more stressful for the animals.
So I can see where he might get a little touchy at times, especially if it was not the first time he had been to a particular location/farm.

My dogs are patients of Dr. Pohls practice. I have had him as a vet since I was a young teen and am 52 now. Rumors of a short temper may be true but I have never seen or heard of anyone else that has witnessed it. He is on the go all the time. He does not slow down. Gets in gets job done and is gone. In his earlier days he drove the wheels off so many g.m. station wagons that we all lost count. Beat the crap out of those old cars. Going out across pastures cricks you name it. He is frugal. He bought that mobile home he uses as an office 2nd hand converted bedrooms to exam rooms. What you see on tv is him for sure. Charles may be smart but is socially awkward. Diane is easily distracted and prone to being disorganized. Dr. Brenda is a very tough acting softy. She has had a team of oxen as pets until 2 yrs ago when one ox died of cancer. Dr Emily is my immediate neighbor. Has a 7 acre farm. has 2 saddle horses and a couple of mini horse that are trained to help minimize anxiety and stress. You rarely see them around but Tony and her do have 4 kids. Didnt mean to write a book but I wanted some to no some of the back story.

Ya,one of our regular vets said he met him just one time. Said he had a call up his way one time and that Doc Pol showed up. Said he was a likable guy, full of whiz and vinegar. Like I said,I never met the man, just going by what some have told me. The clinic we use has had a lot of vets over the years. They've all been good to deal with personally. If I was to criticize any of them,it would be the original owners son,now retired. He just was always in a hurry, had someplace else he needed to be 20 minutes ago. Seemed to just want to treat symptoms and not diagnose what caused them. Doc Pol seems to be just the opposite. Seems to want to get to the bottom of it so it doesn't happen again.

Ya,I've seen him in interviews saying that the Hollywood staff wants more drama but he won't go along with it. Not criticizing him,God knows I can be short if somebody pushes my buttons.

Agreed. I'm sure he's seen a lot of neglect by people trying to cut corners to save dime at the expense of the proper care of an animal.

Vets are just like cops, doctors, truck drivers, farmers, teachers, etc. They are just people. I know a local vet I wouldn't use no matter what and others I'd go out of my way to help. They're just people, good and bad, cranky and nice. We're all Gods creatures with all our faults and good points. I guess that's my out look on it. Personally, I watch every now and again and am happy when I make the same diagnosis the Docs do and learn when I don't.

Ya,some of these folks who call him out to castrate two wild steers and have them penned with three strands of barbed wire, would have me getting back in the car and telling them to call me when they have them confined.

I'll tell you the truth,a lot of the time I feel like I'm watching my dad. Dad was a Swede not Dutch, but you can't deny that Scandinavian look.
