I have an old Fairbanks Morse flat belt generator. It's locked up. Is it worth fixing up? get you get parts? Is there any value in it the way it sits. Thanks, Kirk

Guy on here named Billy Shafer is a generator guru give him a yell if he does not pick up.

As David indicates. If you are showing a tractor that has a belt drive, and you pretty the unit up, it would draw interest. It would run a skill saw or other brushed motor with no electronic speed control, or lights (not lEDs) Jim

Jim,

I hope he is not energizing any IED's.

You got me scared.

Yes, it would make a nice display at a show.

I wouldn't right it off just yet. Those are pretty simple units to repair. 115-230 is now know as 120-240. If the stator and rotor are in good shape. It may just need new bearings which are pretty cheap. Clean and make sure the brushes are free. You need to remove the shield and check the condition of the brush rig. Make sure the brushes are free in the guides

Parts are pretty common and not that hard to find. Depending on what it needs.Fairbanks Morse built some very good equipment. Better than most of the junk you find today. I have a customer that brought me his 1961 Onan CCK contractor unit. I put it back in service and he tossed his big box genset. He could never depend on them. The old Onan just keeps chugging along.

Yes Billy Fairbanks was one heck of a company in its day. There stuff was quality My favorite was there old make brake engines!

Indeed they were, Jocco.

The made magnetos, opposed piston diesel engines for submarines and locomotives and entire diesel-electric locomotives, among many other things.

Eventually, the locomotive works was absorbed into ALCO, which later became the GE locomotive works, now the world leader.

If it was paired with a hit and miss engine would it work. I dont know if they turn enough rpm or if they would be a steady enough rpm.

I have one of today's junk Generac 16kw standby generators. Runs when it should with never a problem. Also have a Generac 6500 watt portable. With today's electronics I would never use an antique generator.

I do not get how you can call the generator junk when it has not given you any issues.

I have a Generac 20kW whole house unit. The original engine leaked oil, it took me 2 years to get it replaced. I finally had to get the president of the distributor to call the company, then they listened to me. They replaced the engine, and it has been running with no issues for the last 10 years. I would never buy another one, but this one is OK. I think Generac's service sucks, but I would bet their units are about as reliable as any other modern generator on the market.

Hello Olliejunkie,

Hit and miss on a generator? It would certainly produce power
of some kind, it would certainly power some lights are
anything else that does not require 60 cycle power as those
beautiful sounding engines are very seldom at the same rpm,

Guido

Kinda what I was thinking. I don't know if a hit and miss would make 1300 rpm and how close it would maintain it but it might be fun to play with. My friends has 2 Fairbanks Morse hit and miss engines.

Hello Olliejunkie,

Playing with the drive to driven ratio, will maximize
generated power, but not steady enough to maintain 60cycles.

Guido.

Thanks for all the input. I'm going to take it to my friends shop for tear down to see how bad in is. If we can save it we will.
