When Britannia Ruled The Waves

I found this video a few months back. The Britts really do it right. Some of the stuff the Germans, Swedish, even French do like this is incredible. Look at Europe how so many of the original canals are saved and are fully restored. Here we just bulldoze everything. Biggest problem is when the damn governmet gets ther fingers in stuff. A lot of the things like this you see are privately funded over there. Here is just one video about The Cosworth canal in Britain. Some of the land owners don't want it back but a whole lot of people do. To me I would think it would be nice to have everything cleaned up.

Thanks for posting, Jeffcat. Fascinating video.

FWIW, there is a relocated and restored lock of the Miami-Erie Canal in Carrollton Park, just south of the UD Arena in Dayton, OH.

More impressively, there is a restored and (IIRC) operating lock of the Miami-Whitewater Canal near Metamora, IN.

For those of you who are really interested, there is a restored aqueduct in Metamora, IN. The aqueduct carries the canal, water, boats and all, across Duct (Duck?) Creek.

Fascinating to see a canal, complete with canal boats crossing above a creek below.

Interesting that they not only built a cosmetically pleasing engine, but the ornate building too...

For a sewage pump! LOL

Below is a link to the Metamora, IN site including links to the restored portions of the Miami-Whitewater Canal.

Aside from operating locks, the restored portion of the Miami-Whitewater Canal at Metamora include the aqueduct across Duck Creek.

This Metamora canal aqueduct is the only restored and functional canal aqueduct in the United States.

The beginning of the end of British seapower occurred when the Bismarck took a casual pot shot at the Hood and sunk it with the first round.

As I read somewhere, deck armor was thin so as to allow for larger/increased munitions, and I guess to still comply with whatever the sea power restriction treaties were in force at the time concerning dead-weight ton limits......for those countries that "chose" to comply. Lucky pot shot on the part of the battleship.
