OT: Cincinnati Water Works Steam Pumping Engines

Well-known Member
The four, triple expansion steam pumping engines at the Cincinnati Water Works were put in service in 1906 and operated until 1963. During their 57 year service life, they were never rebabitted.

The engines are still there folks, and you can visit to see them. 1,400 tons, five stories high, 85' below ground, they are a sight to see.

Be sure to click the videos 1 and 2 and to click the other links to see photos of the construction in the very early 1900s.

The company that designed them and the company that built them are both credited in Video 1.

They're still there, folks.

Go to see them if you can.

As far as I know, everything outside of the engine house is open to the public.

You must make an appointment to view the engines.

See the linked website for more information.

Fascinating! I'll try to visit if we ever happen to pass through Cincinnati on a Saturday.

Another large steam engine you can visit is the mine hoist at the Quincy copper mine near Hancock, Michigan. Definitely worth visiting if you're in the Upper Peninsula.
