Salvation Army Kettle....

Yesterday and today I rang the bell on the 3:30 to 5:30 shift at our local Fareway grocery store for the red kettle. Fareway is a grocery chain based in Iowa and they support the Armies cause. I never did this before and I had a blast! I bought a bunch of small candy canes and gave them to both the young and old-did not matter if they gave or not. I can't carry a tune in a bushel basket but sang Christmas songs to the customers and a lot of them smiled and said thanks--a lot of them looked the other way and kept walking also. Best was the little kids--their mom or dad would give them some money-change or folding and they would put it in the kettle and I would tell them Santa was watching and ask them if they were good and they all said YES. It is fun and I look goofy but I don't care and I have another gig at 9:00 tomorrow. Some of "my friends" that came to the store asked me if I could sing far-far away--Told them I never heard of that song. It is probably too late for this year but if any of you have a chance to do this--go for it.---Tee

My Wife and I noticed several places this year where there has always been a Salvation army bell ringer but not this year, I guess they are short handed everywhere.

It looks like you are having "The Time of Your Life" God Bless You, we need more people who don't take themselves too seriously. Dsmythe

God Bless You!!!

I'll drop a five in every kettle that has a bell ringer, but I struggle with the kettles that are not manned.

Something has changed in our society.

Fareway is a great employer, too. Always closed on Sunday and their meat department is like the 'old butcher shop'. Prices are lower than Hy-Vee, a HUGE chain that has so far kept every other big chain out of the State. Hy-Vee started much like Fareway but good administration let them grow-maybe too much? Safeway and A&P were both put out of Iowa due to Safeway.

Big Tee your a good man!!!!!!!

I think the Red Cross should be given less and the Salvation Army given the money the Red Cross wastes. salvation Army CEO earnings $13,000 plus housing. The Red Cross CEO earns $500,000.

This time of year I always reach into my pocket and dump in a handful of change. Most of the ringers are very pleasent.

Good for you Big Tee!
I went to Cub foods Thursday evening to get a couple of items for a salad.
The bell ringer was a woman that looked and talked like she had muscular dystrophy.
But she was ringing that bell with gusto.
It reminded me that we all have something to give.
I had 3 ones in my wallet and pushed them into her kettle.
She struggled with her enunciation but got the the words out.
"Thaaan Quuu. Merrrry Chrisss - masss."

Good for you Big Tee! My Fire dept where I am very active does this. Being a Christian, I prefer to stay focused on the real meaning of Christmas, so I don't partake of this activity, but I do donate and thank the bell ringer for being there.

My little town has a population of about 600...and one grocery store. For the past couple of weeks there is a softball-sized Salvation Army kettle at the one checkout lane.
I asked the owner/cashier to ring a bell as I dropped on some money, but she doesn't have much a a sense of humor.

Can't stand them darned bell ringers. Them bells go right though my head. Don't understand why stores allow them beggars to ring them bells and I will avoid stores that allow em. What gets me is I have offered them bell ringers 100 bucks not to ring those bells while I'm there. I'll show em the cash! And they insist on ringing those darn bells. So I guess they really don't want my money. Here most of the bell ringers are drunks and druggies.

Now don't get me wrong. I'd rather donate to the Salvation Army than the Red Cross. I just can't stand them darned bells!

I second the motion for Fareway. Meat counter is second to none. Fareway store brand is every bit as good, if not better than the name brands.

PJH, you must have neglected to sign up for your shift. Or did you sign up and forget to go?

I guess I am a homeless bum-The smiles I got for my singing and the candy canes I gave away were priceless!---Tee
