Body Mass Index

There was an article on news tonight about BMI. So I found the
link below how to calculate BMI. I'm overweight. My BMI is 25.1.

Good chance my BMI is likely to increase real soon, Dec 25.

I never heard of a weight unit called a stone.
1 stone = 14 pounds. What country uses stones as a weight unit?
BMI calculator

A "stone" is an old English measure. I worked with an englishman about 15years ago and he said when they converted to metric that a persons weight in kilograms was the only thing he could never get used to. Growing up he said everyone's weight was in stones and that was the only thing that made sense to him

According to the calculator, I'm just a little overweight, but I still can't see my belt buckle when I'm standing up. Somethings wrong

FYI, Kilograms is a mass unit, not a weight unit.
2.2 kg = 1 pound
A slug is an English unit for mass. One slug = 32 pounds.
Where did a stone come from? Is it a male unit? The king has big stones?
I think a slug is the mass of a cannon ball. Not positive about the size of cannon ball, thinking it was a 6 inch.

I figure that when you get your belt half way around you and the buckle is still dragging on the floor,"YOU'RE FAT"

A truck driver once said something to another driver about his belly rubbing the steering wheel. He replied, "Not as long as I keep it on the floor".

>I never heard of a weight unit called a stone.<
You've obviously never had one in your kidney. Afterwards that word strikes fear in a man.

Your royal highness, I've been spend my time with spring cleaning. That's spring of 1998. I've decided if I haven't used it in 20 years it's time to get rid of it. I'm surprised how much bigger my 4 buildings are up North. Have another day or two to finish cleaning and organizing.

It's been warm enough, I may need to mow some grass. So how many stones do you weigh?
Geo

English measure. 1 stone =14 pounds. 2 stones is a quarter and a quarter= 28 pounds. 4 quarters is a hundredweight and a hundredweight= 112 pounds. If you have a Peter Wright anvil you will see the weight stamped on the side. The first number is hundredweight, the second is stones, the third is pounds. Add them together = weight of anvil. Seems more complicated than necessary.

I learned something new. Thanks.

A slug is the mass a cannon ball. Gravity is 32 ft/s2
Weight is mass times gravity. So 1 slug x 32 = 32 pounds.
A kilogram is 1000 cc of water or 1000 grams of water.
I kilo x 9.8 m/s2 (gravity) = 9.8 newtons of weight.

So where did the term stone come from? What of importance weighs 14 pounds?

Back in my military days they would sometimes use the BMI as an indicator of their military image, whatever that was. So if you were an ex-football player your BMI would be high but if you were an emaciated meth user you were in the heart of their "healthy" range. Go figure. :-(

I'm curious as well. I found this on the computer:

Stone, British unit of weight for dry products generally equivalent to 14 pounds avoirdupois (6.35 kg), though it varied from 4 to 32 pounds (1.814 to 14.515 kg) for various items over time. Originally any good-sized rock chosen as a local standard, the stone came to be widely used as a unit of weight in trade, its value fluctuating with the commodity and region. In the 14th century England?s exportation of raw wool to Florence necessitated a fixed standard. In 1389 a royal statute fixed the stone of wool at 14 pounds and the sack of wool at 26 stones. Trade stones of variant weights persist, such as the glass stone of 5 pounds. The stone is still commonly used in Britain to designate the weights of people and large animals.

My wife saw me standing on the scales and I was holding my stomach in. She told me that holding it is won't help. I said, "yes it will it is the only way I can see the scales" Dsmythe

(quoted from post at 16:36:54 12/21/18) FYI, Kilograms is a mass unit, not a weight unit.

Think you got that backwards, 2.2 pounds =1kg.

I like this BMI thing. I am 6 feet tall and weight is 200 lb or 14 stone 4 lb which puts me in the normal range. And my wife just made another batch of pies. We are having her family for a Christmas celebration tomorrow, going to have 30 people. I hope to get at least one sliver of pie.

Bathroom scales in UK hotels indicate weight in stone. I don't have any problem converting kilograms to pounds in my head, but the conversion factor from stone to pounds is something I refuse to memorize.

Actually, the only accurate way to measure BMI is to submerge the person in a tank and see how much water they displace. Just using height and weight will give an erroneously high value for muscular individuals and a low value for flabby folks.

Sounds like you have no shade over your tool shed. Better not go skinny dipping during daylight hours.
