Indiana BMV?

Just wondering if I can renew my driver's license online? Going to be turning 70 soon and need to renew license. I love renewing my license plates online.

I've been driving all these years, why do I need to renew license? Is it just another form of a TAX?

Now on Indiana when you renew they want to make your license a special form of secure id. So you have to take along more documentation like birth cert., ss card, proof of address, etc. Have fun with that. My wife just had to do that.

Good thing I asked. I had no clue I needed all that stuff. How many things will I need to prove who I am?

I live in Vigo county, but Vermillion BMV is closer and not as busy. They are open just 3 days a week and go to another BMV office in Rockville 3 days. Usually there are 4 girls in the office and most of the time none of them are busy.

So I can say I don't go the extra miles.

Can any good come from Google knowing more than the government about you?

I will say the government has prevented another 911. Isn't that to be a good thing?

Not talking about physical miles, talking about effort.......like ensuring that when one votes in your state they are legally registered and are who they claim to be.....in Texas a photo ID driver's license is the primary form of identification.

Geo, check Indiana BMV site for details on this but most states will now mark license with veteran designation if you had military service including guard and reserves with honorable discharge, this is useful for discounts at some places. With most there is no charge with issuance of new license.

They will want your original birth certificate from the county you were born in. A hospital copy is not good enough. SS card is not good enough. Two forms of mail or bank statements. An unblemished calf or lamb and a hair from your first born.

You can renew it on line but if you want/need the new license you have to go in to the BMV with paper to prove that you are who you say. The Indiana bmv website has the list of documents that will work, just click on the will my license fly box! Did my last year and it easy if you bring the right papers.

I liove in Ohio just across the Indiana border. In Ohio it could not be done because they take your picture that is put on the licence as well as doing the eye test. Second last time getting my licence test I barly passed vision, last time easy, I think they changed requirements to make it easier. I don't need to renew my licence untill Sept of 21 and I dought I will be around that long. Back in 60's or 70's Ohio required a statement from Dr that you could see. Grandpa even tho we knew he could not see to drive got that statement and got his licence so with doing it in office prevents you from getting the statement from Dr that you can see and you having never seen the Dr that said you could see good enough to drive. So no way on line. And I will not renew plates either on line or by mail, always in person.

Just renewed my IN CDL in Oct. Stopped in an advance so as to avoid surprises.

Took old license, passport, and two utility bills. No problems.

You might as well get the papers together and go to the BMV. As of Oct.1 2020 you will not be able to go into any government offices or fly on an airplane with out the new driver license.

Have they? I know they claim they have but we don't really know is all the new stuff from the patriot act is the or if it's just better due diligence by one or more of the alphabet agencies. Or in other words after the DEA, CIA, INS and FBI dropped the ball prior to 9/11 is it them just doing what they should have been doing in the first place that's prevented follow ups? Or is it that the terrorist never saw us invading not one but 2 countries over a terror attack? As longs we responded to attacks by tossing a few bombs their way they were only too happy to keep attacking us. Once we invaded 2 countries and targeting known terrorist leaders? Now it seems they like to attack places that are not going to do things like that. After all, they only claim they stopped attacks. They never ever show us any evidence that they succeeded. Just claims to appease us.

Just wait a minute if i dont drive or even have a car i cant fly because i dont drive so no drivers licence i cant fly. You must mean that i need photo on an id card.

I just dropped my CDL in Oct and that is what I was told by the BMV and you can look it up on the internet.

The BMV website says that you can renew online if you meet the requirements:

Renew Online
Customers with a commercial driver?s license or a For-Hire endorsement must visit a BMV branch to renew their driver?s license.
You can renew your driver's license online if you meet the requirements listed below. You will need to provide your name, date of birth, residential address, and Social Security number in order to renew or replace your driver's license or identification card online.
You can renew your driver?s license online only if you meet the following conditions:
You have an operator?s license with or without a motorcycle or For-Hire endorsement.
You are a citizen of the United States and an Indiana resident.
There is no change in your name, residential address or other personal information.
Your previous renewal transaction was completed in a BMV branch.
Your driver?s license is not expired for more than 180 days.
You are not required to take an exam.
You are within 24 months of your renewal date.
You are under 75 years of age.
Your driver?s license does not have restrictions J or 2 - 9
J - Other
2- Habitual Traffic Violator Conditional License
3- Photo Exempt
5- Conditional
6- Interlock Ignition Device
7- Seat Belt Exempt
8- Medical Condition
9- Temporary
Your previous photo is on file
You are not suspended, revoked or invalidated
You do not have six or more active points on your driver record
You are not under 21 years old

However:
Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, a Real ID-compliant driver?s license, permit, or identification card will be required to board commercial airplanes or enter certain federal facilities unless you present a Department of Homeland Security-approved document.

To get a Real ID-compliant driver's license, you need to go to a branch and bring the required ID

One document proving your identity; and
One document proving your lawful status in the United States; and
One document proving your Social Security number; and
Two documents proving your Indiana residency

A list of documents you can use can be found at:

https://www.in.gov/bmv/files/BMV_Documentation_List.pdf

It looks like you can now make an appointment to get your license at a branch

Your last question is one which nobody can answer. For your first question, why not just phone the local motor vehicle office, who else could better answer your question?

You should hope Ohio doesn't administer a spelling test. You'll never drive again if they do.

HA/// that is funny. "call the local BMV"!!

no way. they have made it so you cannot talk to anyone. the "local phone number" goes to a main number in Indianapolis which then becomes a maze of recordings and prompts. Last time i tried i could NOT get to the local branch.

getting more and more so you don't have to go in. of course they haven't cut back on the number of people working there.

to answer the question...if you have a CDL NO.. you cannot. I know that for sure. i think you can but after a certain age you cannot. i don't know what that age is. I would recommend logging in and see if it will let you. if it does and you get a new license in the mail it worked!!

Good luck.

Up here there are what are called "registries" all over the place ..... privately owned. They are I guess the government reps for licensing, plates, and stuff like that. My experience has been that they answer their phones, but dealing with the government directly (which it sounds like is the case where you are) would make a difference. Your reply is evidence of that.

Passports work if you don't have drivers license. Annoying thing for New York City residents, seems that 20% or so of people do NOT have drivers license, need voters registration cards and utility bills to vote-- not enough parking space, high car costs, public transport for most needs. Old draft act stats- 19 to 21 year olds that were expected to have drivers license but New York City had 30 to 35% each year inducted without drivers license, 18 year olds registering were 35 to 40 % no drivers license. Southern California was 95 of 18 years old did have license- and some of those that didn't used to have license and it was pulled for violations. Midwest farm boys 99% with license at registration. RN

yeah

i've found the utilities (phone, power, cable, insurance) are bad to try to talk to anyone too. automated messages to push 4 for this or 5 for that and pushing 0 to get an operator gets you no where. they also want you to type your personal life story over the phone keypad before you have the chance to talk to someone.

George, if some young schmuck working full time can make it down to the DMV for his license renewal, surely you can find time to make the trip.

Mark,
I'm glad I asked. Yes, I'll have to go to BMV and take 5 documents with me to get a secure driver's license. I'm thinking everyone who wants to fly will have to do the same before 2020. When I went to the Statue of Liberty, I had to go through TSA security. That will require secure license in the future.

So Mark, did you know that???

> So Mark, did you know that???

Yep. I currently have a valid passport and a Nexus card, so I don't need an enhanced driver's license.

And maybe an 'eye of newt'. Easy here, go to the MVB (or your BC insurance outlet) Show old ticket, get new photo, done. You still have to pay, but that is true of ALL gov't stuff.

Your state's drivers manual should have the answer to your first question. Some states have their drivers manuals available online.
