Those old cats in the bottom picture are about the age of dad's. The fuel tank on the fender was a 30's early 40's deal after that they were part of the seat.

Actually the seat tank didn't take over until the late 40's. My D4 7U 18 (numbers match) in a 47 model with the fender tank.

I had a '39 D2 with a seat tank. The fender tank was an option
from the beginning I believe.

Don't forget, just before those the gas tank was under the hood right over top of the engine. You almost had to remove everything just to change the plugs. Model Ten and Fifteen.
