Cattle prices

I took some bull calves and a cull cow to the sale barn this week. I was pretty pleased with the price on the 450-500 weight calves. The one marked "thin" was really showing his longhorn heritage. I was pretty surprised with the low price on the small calf. Usually, it seems like 300 pound calves bring the most per pound. He had white around his hooves, maybe they were afraid he was a Holstein cross. Culls were down.

I find it unique that you had 2 calves that weighed the same identical weight & brought the same price per #.

They run 2 similar calves from the same seller on the scale at the same time. Total weight divided by two gives the average weight. They're sold as a pair so individual weights don't matter.

They do that with fats for me. I've had every one on a load of four sell individually and I've had as many as all four sell all on. Depends on how uniform they are.

I took eight this week, but for some reason didn’t get my check today. Wached a handful sell and don’t expect to be super thrilled, but at least I ain’t feeding them anymore. Still have a couple more, plus I had planned to cull a couple cows and maybe the bull. But with cull prices the way they are, I’ll just let them hang around a bit more.

Around here fat calves will sell pick-um.
They will run several calves in the ring from the same seller.
Once the bidding stops the winner can take one or all at that price.

So the 2 sold at the higher price could have just been the winner willing to take the 2 best at the bid price.

I sent two cull cows (Holstein) Thursday... no check yet. They were heavy, so should do ok, although the last one only brought $0.35/lb, and she was over #1400. Two week old Holstein bull calves brought $10 each a week ago. Only covered trucking, probably should consider myself lucky I wasn't billed for yardage. I've heard that selling week old heifers WILL get you a bill, as heifers have been lower than bulls.

(quoted from post at 19:37:46 12/15/18) weaned Bison calves straight of the cow bring twice/triple that.
So do puppies. Not really apples to apples though.
Got my check, pizz poor like I expected. Actually only a couple did poorly, but none did great. At least they’re gone. With the mud it’ll be some time before I can get any more out.
