Looks like we are going to be able to plant hemp pretty soon. Haven't really researched it yet but news blurb alludes to it legalizing hemp for farmers. Maybe I'll plant hemp instead of sunflowers next spring :)

Yeah. I saw that Mitch McConnell pushed pretty hard for the hemp part because it used to be a big part of Kentucky agriculture. In the story, they quoted industrial hemp as a $20 billion market. Also read that in Colorado many farmers had started to grow hops over the past decade but that the market had flattened out and some of them are planning to switch to hemp. This hemp of course has very low THC but is good for fibers and oil.

One thing I think would be nice is to be able to by high quality canvas tarps grown and made in the USA instead of the lousy plastic tarps we are stuck with now.

I can remember those old brown tarps when I was a kid. Man were they
ever heavy! The plastic tarps the ones that stand-up pretty good are
the silver and black ones. Stay waterproof for a good year or so.
Those blue ones are for cover only. Not water proof.

Are sunflowers profitable? Someone planted a bunch, 500-600 acres up by our cabin. They were very late
combining them, and then it looked like they just dumped them on the ground. I was looking at the price
recently and it looks like they have gone down just like everything else.

In Dove Creek, Colorado there was an oil extraction plant
built. When I think three varieties of sunflowers were approved
farmers were told whatever they grew would be purchased .
They even had silos for seed. They were going to provide
cooking oil until profiable then provide oil for biodiesel.
Operation went bust and farmers were hung out with a
promised purchase. Now with hemp a possible alternative I
wish them the best. Let?s get past the stigma and move on.

Yes, by all means, plant hemp. They along toward harvest time start looking into possible markets. Good luck.

In the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia there is a company already has signed up a group of growers to grow hemp for them next year. Many products are made and many more can be made from hemp. The USA has fallen behind because of the stupid laws not allowing Hemp to be grown.

They have been growing it here in Meigs County, Ohio for several years, gives the Law Enforcement something to do along in August. They usually burn it on the Senior Citizens day at ther county fair. Funny thing is, there is never any buds on it when they burn it. Makes a lot of happy and hungry folks at the fair. Only thing is, it's called Pot here. Keith

I saw a story about it on Ag Day a few months back. They said seedlings for transplant were selling as high as $100 each. Could be an expensive startup. I'd for sure want to know where I was gonna sell it before I put that kind of money in the ground.

I think that both the hemp and pot lobbies are hilarious in my mind as they think that they will be immune to oversupply like other commodities. I hope that they enjoy the race to the bottom that corn, wheat, and soybeans have seen for most of their history as traded on CBOT.

Exactly what I was thinking. Now that everybody and thier dog can plant hemp, the supply will instantly exceed demand and the price will crash.

Of course, what'll fix that is a Federal hemp subsidy... We need to help those hemp farmers or there will be hippies that will be barefoot because they can't get hemp sandals.

(quoted from post at 11:15:31 12/14/18) With virtually no thc you would have to smoke a joint the size of a telephone pole to get high.
t a thc ratio of average 10:1 (<10 to as high as 30), a telephone pole might be a bit off.......unless you already smoke really big joints. :)

Reminiscent of a few years ago when folks were going to get rich raising emus and ostriches.

Well one thing for sure if anyone isn't going to grow Hemp they don't need to worry about it.Unless their worry is their Hemp growing neighbor is going to make money while they go broke
growing beans and corn.

Growing hemp for seed has been an established industry in western Canada for more than a decade. I have grown it. Easy to grow but a challenge to combine and deal with the straw after. Burning is the most common method. Had to have the crop inspected to make sure there was no MJ in it. There is a niche market for the seed that can be over supplied easily as some farmers have seed in the bin up to three years before it was taken into the processor. Tough to get it dry so need to be able to aerate and or dry it. Have eaten processed hemp seed before.
