At 6 am internet was acting up. A hard restart, turning modem off and on, didn't work. Had service tech out 6 times. By the time a service tech arrives problem has gone away. So that's when I decided I'll have to figure out problem. We no longer have landline, just internet service from Frontier.

About a year ago, I found a Sidekick T&N meter on the ground where my old phone line comes in at my other place up north. No longer use landline there. I've read up on how to use meter, which hasn't been too useful. Except for figuring which wire is the tip and ring when 45vdc is presence. The 45 vdc went away after a while.

This morning the DSL light was flashing. Computer says I have a bad connection in phone line. So I decided to eliminate the old 1968 wiring. The original interface box is at my garage door to house. There is evidence lightning got to the interface box. It was located there before there was a garage. Now new interface box is outside garage and new wire ran to old interface. So I twisted the tip and ring wires to a pair wires running to a box inside house next to garage door, only about 2 ft away. That removed all the old house wiring.

Then I wired phone wire directly to box inside house. This eliminated all wire connections inside house.

Not going to say I found the problem, IT'S WORKING. Listing to Willy's Roadhouse on TV. That will be a fast way to know when my DSL quits working.
Keeping fingers crossed.

This is the old interface box inside garage.

This is the box inside house about 2 ft from old interface. I removed the end from old phone cable and wired tip and ring directly.

This is modem sitting on floor close by. All lights are working. Internet light flashes when something is connected to internet.

DSL light is not flashing indicating a good connection to central office.
Hope this is my last post concerning DSL issues.

Woof! Not as bad as the phone wires (abandoned) in my house from 1938. There have been 3 different rental tenants in the house at various times in the period from 1960 to 1995. There are 12 wall plates with connections. some are small black boxes for hard wire connections to wall phones. Though they all actually work, I use none of them. My cable goes directly to the modem/router for 200/sec service. I think you found it. Jim

Hi George, I think you did find the problem. I had that same issues as you, and disconnected all the old wires to solve the problem. It didn't "click" for me to have you try the same thing. Sorry, I wasn't thinking...

tip and ring..

ring is always.... red, right and ridged...

on the old cable, it was red.. green was the tip side.

on any terminal, is the right lug

on drop wire, is the ridged side.

and on the newer data approved cable, its the solid color... ie

blue with white strip is ring, the white with blue strip is tip.

Orange with white strip is ring, the white with orange strip is tip..

so on the blue pair, the mostly blue wire is ring.. On the orange, green, brown, and slate pair, the dominate color will be ring.

The old red green yellow black wire should NOT be used for dsl as it will have bad crosstalk and interference....
