knotter inventor

I mentioned in an earlier post about Ed Nolt and his inventions related to the New Holland balers. However as some one questioned, Mr Nolt did not invent the knotter. John Appleby of Wisconsin was the knotter inventor. I found an article with that story.

Oh yes and it is an interesting story,,and the idea has not been changed much over time.

Thanks for posting that. I always wondered just who first invented the knotter. I did some searching a few years ago and what I found was that it was invented in England in the thirties and from there, kind of a dead end and I never got around to further searching.

Such a simple thing that we take for granted,,,and no one can come up with anything different. I have been working on knotters since 1974 and I am still amazed with the way they work,,exspecialy when they are working right....

NASA has employed some of the smartest people of our time , but the inventor of the baler knotter was a frekin genius.

He came up with the basic idea and couldn't bring it together for a while,,he thought it must be impossible or the big company's would have already done it,,he got the idea of the Bill Hook while he was watching a bird one day,,or maybe it was from that bright light that came over him in the pasture field one night??

Whoever it was,he was some kind of genius, that's for sure.

Thanks Ron, that was pretty interesting. I would guess a lot of mechanics have been humbled by a non-functioning knotter. Last winter my friends New Holland wouldn't tie. Although I have some experience, I figured it was beyond me but we were able to get the service manager at the local New Holland dealer to look at it if the baler was brought to my heated shed, much closer to the dealership.

We worked on it several evenings once we installed the new parts the service manager recommended. The service manager took my friends high school age son under his wing and they did most of the work. Yep, he got it tying almost non-stop. My friend is pretty happy. I was amazed the service manager nailed it so well. It is amazing how frustrating it can be and you would swear it couldn't work, but once everything is dialed in, it works pretty reliably.

Rusty6,

You certainly could be right. I didn't search any further than this article I posted. Maybe I'll get inspired enough to "dig" further!

My grandpas brother worked on binders years ago. Grandpa said that a little boy came up to my great uncle one day and asked him how it tied that knot in the twine. Grandpas brother told the little boy that a little man lived inside the binder and he tied those knots. We have always laughed about the little?Knotters? who live in our square balers.

From what I have heard Ed Nolt is the one who kept improving the binder knotter,I think he is the one who put the wiper arm on it I will have to check on the patents from Ed again he had many of them for balers
