tractor related, he liked to ride on tractors.

Our beloved dog Champion died this afternoon age 15-1/2 years. Lisa found him still warm this afternoon in his favourite napping spot out in the sun .
About 5 years ago we noticed he was slowing down then two of the children brought home pups . Poor Champ was so disappointed that he wasn't the one and only . We made sure that he was called first, fed first, petted first, first in or out a door first, always had a place for a truck ride as sometimes the other dogs had to stay at home. Champ started walking proud with renewed energy, vigour and youth , he liked being the Alpha Dog even better than being the only dog.
Poor old fellow didn't have much left for teeth so we fed him softened food. The past few years Champs was barking louder and louder. We realized he was going deaf so he kept upping the volume so he could hear himself .
Champ was good teacher. He used to herd the chicken in and out of the shed or up and down the laneway several times a day.
One day something was different about the chickens being driven in and out of the shed. particularly when Champ was asleep beside me. One of the kid's pet rabbits was herding the birds around like a border collie.
The eldest and his fiancée had just dropped in today half an hour prior to Lisa arriving. They had visited on a whim while they were driving in the area to check the renovations and to see Champ. They were the last to see him run about , bark excitedly and expected to be fussed over . It looks like Champ waited for the eldest to visit, Champ said his goodbyes then he laid down and died as the kids drove out the laneway.
We had wondered during the past week or 10 days . Champ was demanding more attention, more truck rides, more cheese treats and more "Champ Burgers" at McDonalds. So glad we did. We knew he was on borrowed time but he was so full of vigour. Fortunatley to his last moment.
Looks like he waited for the eldest , said his goodbyes , laid down and died when they left .
I have not felt so sad for a very long time.

Always heartbreaking to her this from anyone. Because they are so much better friends than a lot of humans we know, it's actually harder when they pass. I believe God sent us dogs to try to teach us how to all live and get along better. They try their best and people I know who are dog people are a more gentle and understanding than what few people I know who won't and never had dogs. The old ones just somehow , seem to bring a young one or two into our lives before they leave. A little help from God I believe.

So sorry to hear of your loss. You can be comforted knowing you gave Champion a good home, and good care for all his years. It is a sad time, but remember the all the happy years you had, with Champion. Stan

Sorry for your loss. Sounds like he had a good home, was well cared for
and didn't suffer too much in the end. Can't ask for much more. It is hard to lose a friend.

Nice piece of writing B&D. It is clean,
heartfelt and allows all of us share not
only your loss but the good times too.
Thank you for it.
I'm sorry about Champ. It sounds like he
had a great life with you.

They sure find a way into our hearts, don't they B&D. Sorry about your dog, sounds
like he had a good and full life with caring companions.
Ben

So Sorry for your loss, We all have felt this pain.
here is a story you need to keep in your heart.

The Rainbow Bridge ( inspired by a Norse legend)

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears puncture wound forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over? together.

Beyond the Rainbow

Sorry for your loss.

But what a way to go! Sounds like he was happy and active to the end.

Best of all, he went when it was his time.

So sorry to read this, they are a part of our families, and leave a hole in our hearts when they leave!

My college friend and CPA had to put his dog down. He called on the hottest day
of the summer. Wanted me to come over and dig a grave for his dog. I could tell
he was very sad and there was no way he could dig a grave with his bad knee.

He wanted me to dig a 6 ft grave. He wrapped his dog in a blanket. Sad moment
when I covered his old friend. His clay soil was wet to stick in back bucket.
Had to bang it on a piece of concerte to get the clay out.

I was glad to help an old friend.

Champion had a great family that loved him to the last breath. Heart felt sorrow for the
loss.....I know the pain.

So sorry to hear of your loss. A good dog is truly mans best friend. Your story about Champion reminds
me of my grandfather telling me about a dog they had before I was born. The dog was up in years and
on the last day of his life didn't get up most of the day, just laid waiting by the door. When my grandfather came
into the house at night the dog got up greeted him and laid back down by the door and died.
