Effective in 2020, you will need a "special" driver license with more validation to fly, or a passport. I am getting mine renewed, Iowa marks these with a gold star, make sure you take the requested documentation if you want one.

for work I flew 100,000 miles a year for 26 years never want to step on a plane again ✈✈✈✈

I should be covered. We got a Michigan Enhanced DL couple years ago so we could go into Canada and back without a passport. On our west trip last year it worked 10+ times. It also got us on Alaska Air without going thru the heavy screening process.

Explains how so many people get across the border into the US or from the US into Canada. They have a special license ?

Enhanced drivers license is different from Real ID that David is talking about. The Real ID license will get you on a plane, but not through customs.

Some of the Border states offer the enhanced license. Some tried it and dropped the idea due to low take rate. There are only a few states where a large number of Americans cross the border regularly.

I renewed my license a couple weeks ago. I forgot to bring my SSN card, so didnt get the real ID license. Guess I will have to take the passport for the next few years. On the plus side, I put the hazmat back on my license, and went through the background check for that. I flew a couple weeks ago and got sent to the short security line. I would guess it is all in their system.

Got my enhanced a couple weeks ago. If you go, look online for the documentation you will need. I saw several people make an extra trip because they were missing something. I had everything I needed first time.

It is also required to enter federal buildings. Indiana has a list of acceptable documents to get the new license so I had no trouble getting mine last year.

I just got a card notifying me my CDL needs to be renewed. I do not have the gold star so I will need my birth certificate or passport, a letter or bill with my address on it to prove I live in the state and possibly a Social security card too. Then my new license will have the gold star. Gone are the good old days.

Yes,

SS card or Passport, and LETTER WITH ADDRESS on it, not the letter, and a document like a pay stub or W2 with SS on it.

So we need a document with the SS number on it instead of the SS card? Or both? I know in my county seat town fake ss cards are a dime a dozen.

I do not have SS card, but have passport, brought letter with name and address on it, they wanted passport, envelope with name and address and other document with SS on it. So it sounds like they wanted 2 documents with SS.

We got the Global Entry pass a couple of years ago, which also gets you TSA Pre-Screen. Kind of a hassle to do the paperwork but I think it's worth it if you fly more than a couple of times a year.

I've had a valid passport since 1974:
Opportunities that I've enjoyed would never have been available with out a Valid Passport:
Sure glad I've had it:

Im from Iowa and have the Real ID. I had to have social security card, Birth certificate and a blank check with your address on it OR a piece of mail with your name and address on it.

(quoted from post at 18:12:21 12/11/18) The European Union's borders are more open than ours. We are slowly losing our freedoms.

Yeah, and they are up to their necks in Arabs too.
They're starting to cry Uncle.

(quoted from post at 17:45:27 12/11/18) A concealed carry permit will work too.

From TSA's site;

A weapon permit is not an acceptable form of identification.

Any US citizen who lives in a state on the border with Canada should absolutely get a Nexus pass.
- Nexus gives you Pre-Check
- Nexus gives you Global Entry
- If you have a Nexus card, you don't need an enhanced driver's license.
- At 50 bucks, Nexus is actually CHEAPER and BETTER than either Pre-Check ($85) or Global Entry ($100).

So what's the catch? For Nexus, you have to submit to an interview one of the Nexus locations, which are all on the US/Canada border. But you can schedule it months in advance at your convenience, so even that's not a problem if you regularly travel to Canada.

When I got my CDL renewed I got the real ID.

I needed my birth certificate to prove citizenship.
My S.S. card. Some other form that shows the entire S.S. number will work.
And 2 forms of residency such as a bill with your name and address on it.

I only did it because I had all the proper paperwork with me.
I use my TWIC card to fly because it usually gets me threw the do not take off your shoes line.

NYS has offered the enhanced license since at least 2009, I've had one since then, last renewed in 2017. NYS enhanced DL has an American Flag on it, and says "Enhanced" across the top.

I had to renew my CDL last fall. They required a birth certificate to renew. Couldn't locate my birth certificate, so went to county clerk's office to get a new one. County clerk wanted to see ID to give me a copy of my birth certificate. ID they required was drivers license. Am I the only one who thinks this is a little ridiculous?
