was checking the glow plugs and discovered that the exhaust manifold was broken. anyone have luck welding or brazing them ??

This is a very popular and frequent topic here. There are many that do it with success though it is tricky and proper procedures and special nickel rod is usually used. You can find a lot about it by searching in the archives.

just replace it the cost to fix will be about the price to replace and it will be new .finding someone now days that can fix it will not be EZ

Do you have the equipment to resurface the gasket surface or would you just hope that it stays flat enough not to leak after welding or brazing?

Check the price for a new replacement part.

JM may have one laying around. In a post before he mentioned he had several engines. Post engine info maybe he will see it ?
Short of that I have welded several tractor manifolds. Even brazed one on a chevy 454. I did all I could on the engine and then removed it and did the backside. Had to weld the one on the JD 4020 gas it was cracked in the middle. Took it off and used nickel rod in an AC stick welder. It welded up nice veeing it as I went. But when done it was out of whack ! That is a very long manifold. Put it in the milling machine and trued it all up and had to oversize some of the bolt holes to get it to fit. Been years ago and it is still holding. Did a few other small ones for JD LA's and they welded up fine with nickel rod.

after further disassembly it was broken beyond repair, ordered a new one. thanks for the replys

Cannot remember what tractor you were working on but yes I probably had the manifold. If welding one I always try to tack it all back together on the machine then remove it for finish welding.
