Want to put a diesel in a farmall h

Why bother. The two plow size H would only use about two gallons of gas man hour. A diesel version might use 2/3 of that, but diesel fuel is over $1
per. gallon more than gas right now. If your are set on having a diesel tractor buy a used newer one with lots of features the old H never had. Just my opinion.
 
There are not any blocks that I know of that will directly bolt in. You can make anything fit anything else with a enough time, money, and machining.
 
Looking at the price of diesel vs gas, I
would be doing a little performance work on
the H. Maybe mill the head, dome pistons,
advance the timing, electronic ignition,
free up that exhaust.....

For a small tractor and low hours, you
would never recover the cost of the diesel
swap.
 
Why is it you desire to do this? because you want to create something unusual/one of a kind? Just wondering what you motives are. gobble
 
Ya I would just have it for messing around lol I already got 15 in my shed just was wondering if any of the farmall diesels would kinda bolt up with some work. fabricating isn’t a problem. Just wanted to get your guys opinion on what engine you would start with.
 
I wonder if it would be too hard to find a diesel 350 and use that motor in the "H"??? It was a four cylinder
 
Well the simplist would be to get the Diesel engine from the
340 and use that. I know of a guy who installed it in his W4
and calls it his WD4. Looks good too. It is the same version as the 282 from the 560 but only 4 cyl?s.
 

Why limit yourself to an IH diesel? Seems like a I saw a picture not too long ago of an H with a Kubota diesel engine in it? There are bunches of Farmall Hs out there. We don't need to keep all of them original.
 
My farmall C has no frame. The engine bolts to the bell housing which bolts
to the transmission.

I can't see reinventing a wheel. There are too many issues to consider first.
When Ford made the Jubilee, they used the 8N rear end which wasn't built for
the bigger engine.

Many can add to the issues created when a bigger engine was added on old rear
end. I think, could be wrong, IH had an issue using the M rear end when it
upsized the engine.

The people who pull tractors may have a better idea of the issues you will
face putting more Hp to a Farmall H.

If you increase the power, and then pull a larger plow, you do stand a chance of damaging the rest of the power train. However, if you increase the power, and still pull the same plow at the same speed, the rest of the drive train will never know the difference.
 
There was a kit to put a Shepard diesel in an M.

Go for it! I think it’s a great idea too. It isn’t like there are only three original H’s left in the world. When you get it done show us pictures.
 
None of the IH diesels that would come close to bolting up in an H are all that common. To get a D188 you'd be knocking a rare 340 or 504 diesel in the head. Same with the D239 from a 544.

Those also only address the bell housing fit. They're all wider engines that may not squeeze between the frame rails of the H, so you may need to adapt the "bump out" frame rails from a 460, or the "side mount" frame rails from a 504/544.
