Closed center hydraulic starting issue

I have JD 301a and it starts like crap because it wont turn over fast enough untill i turn in the destroking screw. Would a leak anywhere on the tractor cause this? Like a leaky hydraulic hose or is it a internal issue?

Probably an internal leak, could be a remote, the steering valve, rockshaft valve/ rockshaft, loader
valve or reverser valve or seals (if equipped) Start the tractor cold let run at medium speed and feel
the various hydraulic options, or use a heat gun. The leaking valve or function will be noticeably
warmer than the surrounding castings.

Without touching the destroking screw try cranking it over and see it the crank speed increases when you rock the steering wheel or cycle the bucket hydraulics, if your's has the joystick control try pushing it all the way forward into the float position.

The hyd problem causing difficult starting is internal. My ""guess"" is it's a valve in frt hyd pump not seating correctly. Very good diagnostics will be required to locate the problem. You will need to study the hyd oil schematics in a JD 301A tech manual very diligently if you attempt to solve your tractors starting problem or as many tractor owners have done over the yrs just wiggle steering rapidly from side to side while cranking engine.

Yes you have one or more small internal leaks that you will most likely "Never" find,,de-stroking valves are kinda hard to deal with and electric destrokeing valves are pricey...Jiggle or turn the steering wheel slowly will do near the same thing and is handy to do,,my old 310B has been started like that for the past 20 years,,and it was worn out before I got it,,a slite turn of the wheel frees it up to start well even in cold weather.

I agree with what Tim says as far as accessing the destroke screw. I drop the rockshaft then move the lever to raise
while starting. Which is good if you have a rockshaft.
I have here an extension handle to turn the destroke screw on 4wd tractors for diagnostics.....maybe rig something
like that up?
Does your ground cable bolt to the side of the battery box or to the engine block?
