Tractor trade

Hello all, Im considering on trading my Ford 801 select o speed with a loader on it for an old dozer that needs work or been sitting for years. The 801 needs the carb cleaned and other wise runs well. I have seen several old dozers sell for $1500 or so, pretty much just to get rid of them. Is the 801 worth $1500 or is that too high. As I said it runs well, transmission is an updated select o speed with no issues and a heavy duty trip bucket loader. fair trade or not?

Seems to me to be a disaster, but we really need to know what you want to do with the dozer. Dozers are kept in service until their repair cost to keep them going exceeds their work return. Then they sit and rust solid.
But::: If you need a dozer, and you find the miracle dozer that is good enough to be repaired enough to do what you need, and that the cost of that repair (including labor you put into it) is less than the cost of renting a dozer to do the tasks you have in mind, then my recommendation is be careful. The last tread fall that the dozer made when it was shut off happened for a reason. Your tractor is operational. a 1500$ dozer is probably scrap price, and nearly impossible to get to the scrap yard. Before you do this trade, run the dozer. If you are inexperienced, they are clumsy, awkward, and noisy. I've had several from 60 HP to 100 HP. I now have a 50 HP skid loader and can get more done with it than any of the crawler/loaders.

I?m thinking, not such a good deal. As much as I would like to own a dozer, just because I want one. I would not trade a running tractor for one that is broke down.

What kind of loader, welded trip bucket, or a quick thatch more modern all hyd one? Or somewhere between?

What are the tires like, esp the rears, on the tractor? Good, fair with some minor cracks, or need to carry an air tank along?

I almost asked if it was gas or diesel, but doh, you mentioned a carb.... I almost embarrassed myself.

The SoS is a possible money pit so it is a negative, but a good loader and or good tires can make that right up again.

I take it the tractor runs, you say it needs some carb work?

I?ve seen them sell from $1000 to $4000, but the details make some difference.

I have two of each. Would I trade for it? Sure. And incoming cash. Now if the seller desires a straight trade, make the dozer run.
If not running, I would offer local scrap value less transport cost. So about $500. That 801 with an FEL, well, I just paid 2600 a year ago or so for a running 871 Demonstrator, painted blue, with an FEL. My non running 801 came with a bassket case diesel engine for $300.
Running dozers go around 1500 for something older that dirt right on up.
You haven't mentioned what the dozer is. Mine are the Cat Twenty-Two variety. Circa 1937 vintage.
One came home, non-running for $500 and the second one came in at $800. So using my math, your trade leaves you light about $2K.

Proceed with caution and cash. I bought a non running D4D that had sat idle for several years. Had an old Cat skinner crank it up and repair a steering clutch that had been improperly replaced. I have been VERY lucky and VERY happy with the machine. I added a winch and some sweeps and even a paint job. She sits in a shed and has battery tenders on both batteries. Blade is a bit sloppy, undercarriage is worn, but I sure enjoy working it. I can?t argue with the speed and ease of a good skid steer. Don

I should have thought more before typing. Lol, my 801 has a gas motor which I know it hurts the value. The tires are in fair shape, one rear tire needs air when the weekend shows up. The loader bucket is trip only, but seems very heavy duty. The brakes are there but not for a steep hill. The sheetmetal is all there but mother nature has seen it more than a cover.
As for the dozer, I have only inquired on 2. A cat d4 and an Allis Chalmers. Both are old I know and they do run but my offer was declined. I see them often so Im certain to find one to trade. I have a little MF200 track loader with a 3n1 bucket and its ok but it wont push a tree. And to be honest Id just like to have a larger dozer to play on. Do I need it? Nope, but Im gonna get one. Lol, just got the 801 as a partial trade and I dont like it. I have other older tractors and this one just never draws my interest. So, its time to trade it for a money pit dozer. Im certain none of you have ever bought a money pit, so I will be lonely here. Laughing...Now your opinion please

I would need a lot of patience and 20 minutes of fighting levers to push out a 20? oak. Hard on everything including the operator. It HAS and CAN be done, but you gotta dig a hole and a ramp to accomplish the task. Wonderful for clearing trails and downed brush. Winch is unbelievable! Be very careful. It is amazing how fast creatures and debris can arrive in your face! Modified Grammer seat and fire extinguisher are good investments

Traditional Farmer, or he could just trade the tractor for an old boat, quad, snowmobile, or anything older than 20 years. That sat in a yard or back 40 that takes his fancy to and get the same result There is loads of that type stuff out there guys want to sell or trade for a reason L.O.L.

I've seen many Ford tractors with SOS for sale. Some are sold as parts tractors. Sellers are lucky to get rid of it. I'm gun shy when it comes to SOS.

No dozer D4 size is "easily " going to push over a 20" oak.
If you plan on removing a lot of trees, you would be better off, hireing some one to clear cut the trees and sell for mill logs or firewood logs and hire someone with a sizable track hoe to dig the stumps out. Then you with a smaller dozer could push the stumps to the edge of the cleared ground.

a money pit! is that the hole in the back yard where grand pa buried all his money where all the family has digging for the last 70 years and still can't find as the old guy spent it on wine women and song?
