2032 Li battery for car fob?

Do 2032 batteries leak when they go dead?

A friend wanted me to replace the battery in his car's clicker, The fob. He said it didn't work anymore. Car is 15 year old GM.

When I opened it up, everything looked wet like to was covered in an oil. It definitely wasn't water inside. The fob looks waterproof. How could oil get inside the FOB? Could the oil have came from the Li battery?

I'm asking because I've never seen anything like it.

The wet is usually battery acid/ corrosion from a battery gone bad. Mix up a few drops of baking soda and water and dribble into it , if it fizzes up its acid from the battery

Well, at least you were able to open it up. I thought my batteries were gone and tried to open up my electronic door opener/key. Tiny Phillip head screws, couldn't begin to budge them without being afraid or stripping the heads. Seemed to fix itself on its own so I didn't have to do anything more. Car is 12 years old, not sure how long those batteries are expected to last.

The lithium batteries have a bit different chemical comp. Nothing like the damage from the old zinc acid batteries. Pop it apart and gently wash it with a little soap and water. Be VERY careful with those push bottons. Let it dry out and install a new battery. I change mine every two years just to make sure they will stay working.

Key fob started acting up a few weeks ago. Asked the dealer about the key fob. Said it might be time for a new battery. Got new lithium button battery, put it in, key works like new. This was a seven year old keyfob , battery never replaced. Dealer said be very careful with innards of the key, has a delicate miniature circuit board inside, easy to mess up the circuit board and a new key is $200 at the dealer.

Unlike other type of dead batteries, there was only oil all over, no corrosion present. Everything covered with oil, even the circuit board. Which makes me wonder where did it come from?

I was at a restaurant. I had no way to clean it. Wiped up a little oil with a napkin. He wanted me to Install a new battery and put it back together.

Dealers are a rip. You can get the same fob for around $30.oo tops on Ebay. There is an outfit out of Delaware that is very good. Bought a couple for my Expedition two years ago. Just my opinion.

Couldn't say whether it came from the battery, but that would be my guess too. No way to tell from the battery itself whether it's leaking? I can say that my fob's been through the washer and dryer cycle a couple of times and still works fine. It does wear the batteries out faster. They only last between 1-2 yrs compared to the 8yr old original in the other fob. The one in my Silverado is still going strong after 5 yrs. Both have remote start. Wife's basic Mazda fob only gets about 1 year out of a battery.

I think you are right. He called me a few minutes ago to thank me. Says the fob is working.
Pure oil isn't a conductor. Somehow oil got inside. Couldn't be an electrolyte from battery or everything would be corroded. He isn't telling the whole story.

George be careful on that oil thing. Land of almost right could use oil that may not be good for your health. If you go to your sister down south bring back some WINTER carrots. Remember that one LOL
