No mail delivery tomorrow

Junk mail is a big piece of the US Postal Service's income. Without it, you would only be getting mail delivery 2-3 times a week, if that, and most people aren't okay with that.

Other than carrying it in from the mailbox and huffing it in the recycle bin, it does you no harm physically or financally. I have no idea why people have such an apoplexy about junk mail.

Unless, you are one of those folks that just absolutely *has* to open each and every one... Then I don't understand why you do THAT...

Friend of mines wife gets plum bent out of frame over junk mail. For the last several years she writes return to sender on it and puts it back in the box.

My fight against junk mail is based on this
principle:
My mail box is Not a repository for every
Tom, Dick and Harry's marketing scheme.
It is mine and I should be able to control
who uses it.
We are reaching sensory overload with all
the advertising in this country. From
billboards to electronic media to junk mail
to door knockers. Even the gas pumps have
televisions on them now trying to sell me
stuff.
Most of it is hawking crap I don't need,
want or even care to know about.
If you don't mind getting it, that's okay
with me.
But please leave me out of it.
I use a bunch of stamps and envelopes each
year writing to junk mailers.
I write the following on a piece of paper
and include it with their advertising in
the envelope.
"The pox on you junk mailers. Remove this
address from All future marketing schemes."
If I continue to get stuff from them I look
up who is the company CEO and send him a
letter threatening legal action.
I write to my elected reps and suggest they
enact legislation to allow us to opt out of
unsolicited mailings.
No,I don't get apoplectic over junk mail.
It's more like a game I like to play and I
don't mind spending a few $ a year on
stamps to play it.
I never give anyone my address either.
I get maybe 2 or 3 pieces of junk mail a
month now and would do just fine with
biweekly mail delivery.

M-Man ...... no offense but your friend's wife is wasting everyone's money. And if she thinks that it ends up back with the sender, she's dreaming. Cheaper for her to put it into the recycle bin herself than to have some postie pick it up and haul it back to the post office where they recycle it into their bin. And you know who pays for that .....

There is a lot of misunderstanding going on here. Most of it make no difference, because you don't care, you just want what you want.
You are not the customer when it comes to incoming mail. The person who payed the postage is the customer, that is who the PO needs to keep happy.
When you write "return to sender" or any of the other things that folks think are cute funny or profane, you are only inconveniencing your carrier. The sender never sees them as the furthest they go is to your Post Offices recycle bin. Return, forwarding and most other services are only for first class mail.
If you want to make yourself feel better, the one thing you can do is to stuff the "Business Reply" envelopes with all the junk that came with them. "Business Reply" cutomers pay by weight when they receive their mailings.
Will likely do no good, but if it makes you giggle, go for it!

Remember many years ago when the Boy Scouts used to go around neighborhoods and put a little reminder note in the mailbox to go and vote. The stupid postal service was all ready to sue them. They couldn't even hang the tag on the boxes flag. Idiots.

If the junk mail would just pay the same as everybody else to send it would not be so bad but hate to subsidees a junk mail sender to me that is what I hate. If they would just get ride of that give away rate to them the post office would have plenty of money for years. And any bills I cannot pay locally I send a check in the mail and that is the way I recieve the bills as well. Do nothing on line except get bank statement 365 days a year.

The problem here once you let one group do it you can't keep everyone else from doing it. You can thank our legal system for that.

Not quite true; my Mom worked for Columbia House and every self-addressed envelope was opened. People would send cash and orders so they had people hired that looked at every returned letter, even when the envelope was obviously 'stuffed'.

Glad that Pres Bush will receive that honor.

I'm surprised to see your post triggered a bunch of protest over junk mail. Your post wasn't even remotely suggesting that.

Folks please refrain from protest and add some honor to our former president.

Ron ..... from north of the 49th, I agree with your comment. Funny how things get derailed at times and I'm as guilty as anyone. I think George was a pretty-good-neighbor kind of president for Canadians.

55 50..agree it's about honoring our former president. I was a teenager when he was elected and I can remember the fall of the Berlin wall and the invasion of Panama. The blaring of rock and roll to drive Noriega out!

You are 100% wrong.
Junk mail is actually subsidizing first class postage.
Even at the "give away rate", junk mail is the major income for the P.O. and is what helps keep the rates for "regular mail" from going through the roof.

Ron,
Agree with you. How many times have you seen posts go sideways, totally off topic, lots of venting?
