Thank you everyone for your help! I knew the tractor community was friendly but this is awesome!

That Farmall H linked to on Craigslist looks very promising. I like that it is running and it seems like a good price. Like I said, I would not be totally object to buying a non running tractor.

One main question I have is, how can I tell if a non running tractor can be fixed easily? Also, is there anything to look for, or to listen for, in a running tractor to know if it is a solid runner?

Thanks again!

John

There is really no easy to tell if it is serious or not. Only experience can tell you that. To get that experience, you're going to need a lot of 'practice'.If it's stuck, odds are strong it will need a complete overhaul. That means MONEY,lots of it.You might get lucky, but usually not. If it's free but not running,it may need only a battery, carb clean up,tune up,etc. Or more.....includeing an overhaul. Happy tractoring.Go get em!!

There is really no way to tell the $ to spend to get a non runner running, not that a runner is guaranteed good, but does run.

I read your earlier post and wish you well on your search. Be patient and keep your eyes open and you'll find something soon. Around 1998 I bought 2 IH M's both were non-running for $500. It WAS a gamble but one of the M's had been running before the other one was a parts tractor. Ended up having to tear down the recent runner and overhaul it. Was able to sell both later on and came out okay profit wise. Bought an old H for $100 and parted it out, again made some $$. It doesn't always work out the way you might think so be prepared. Hauled both of the M's one at a time with a 4WD F-150, I didn't get in a hurry. Stopping is much more important than being in a hurry! There are any number of old tractors that would work for you, try to pick one that has the most bang for the buck, as mentioned earlier tires can be expensive as well as a major overhaul. Anti-freeze in oil is a problem, cracked blocks and heads can be an issue, so can getting a crank turned. Remember there are no guarantees in old equipment :) Good Luck in your search!

Check with McCullough Farm Parts 724-254-6400 they have a bunch of tractors for sale. 75 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Perefect! Reasonable price. Needs enough attention to be fun/interesting/a good learning experience. But not to much to be overwhelming.
