Bad flywheel?

My generator with the 305cc/14.50 briggs and Stratton engine just quit out of the blue.no spark at all.cleaned the rust off the flywheel and replaced the coil.set the coil gap at 10 thousand ths as specified, still nothing..grounding switch is disconnected. The flywheel is not perfectly round causing it to rub hard on the coil.I?m told I need a new fly wheel?????

Flywheel out of round or the shaft wobbling?
I'm not sure how the flywheel would get out of round all
of a sudden, but I'd be interested in understanding that.
I personally would be looking at replacing the Briggs with
something else. Possibly a $99 Harbor Freight Predator.

Don?t understand if either never ran low on oil has maybe 10 hrs total running time on the engine!

Before investing in a new flywheel, pull it off, check the crank for runout or excess clearance in the main bearing.

I don't understand how a flywheel could get out of round unless it is spinning on the crank or received some outside damage.

Never seen a perfectly round Briggs flywheel. Make sure the key in the flywheel isn't sheared and set the coil so the high side isn't touching the coil. It's been running that way since new.

If the flywheel suddenly wobbles (enough to scrub the coil)
the crankshaft might be broken.

Does it have a low oil shut down switch on it mounted on the crank case? Try unplugging that to see if it has spark.

Try a different approach to gaping ignition module. Use paper money. Put 3 dollar bills between flywheel magnets and ignition module.
Tighten module, rotate flywheel and get your money back. If that isn't enough gap, use more money. That works best for me. I also remover all rust form module and flywheel with a wire brush on drill or right angle. No air gap is your problem.

How many 3 dollar bills do you use. LOL. Sorry could not resist.
My Dad always used a postcard to set the gap on them.

The low oil shut down switches are known for malfunctioning. Does it have enough oil in it?

It has no low oil shutdown. There a wire going from the coil to the switch and one from the switch to ground which is not connected now.it doesn?t make sense to me either but I will pull the flywheel next week when I get back from deer camp

That was gonna be my suggestion. The one on my corn rake shears from time to time. They use a special key. You can't put just any old one out of an assortment in there even though they'll fit.

That is "about" 8 HP.

The mfg are shying against HP ratings, probably because of litigation for making false claims. They are going more for torque ratings, as if that will keep them more honest...

If you are considering replacing the engine, be sure to check the mounting rabbit and the crank shaft dimensions. Generator engines have a different block and crank than standard engines.

Whomever told you that you need a new flywheel is every bit as confused about this problem as you.
