Cobey manure spreader

I am working on a Cobey 100? and trying to figure out what the bottom lever (the green one) is for. The plate it is attached to is independent of the other plates behind it.

Looks like it adjusts the apron chain
speed.

VicS is right that lever controls the apron speed
by how many teeth the pall can advance on each
revolution. My Dad bought a spreader like yours new
in the early 50s along with the extension sides and grain
gate that went in place of the beaters. The old spreader is still
alive minus the beaters and my son now uses it for wood.
Dad was very fussy with his Cobey and cleaned it off well
after the daily load. I hope you have good luck with your repairs.

Thanks. I thought that it may do that but couldn't figure out how it would. Guess after I fix it I will just have to play with it to find out.
