Re: Battery life

Not enough time during the week to reply to some posts, but I try to read most of them every day. In response to the post about battery life, here is the battery in my golf cart that was in it when I bought it 4 or 5 years ago. It sets most of the winter and I use a cheap battery maintainer from Harbor Freight on it. The battery in the LX 188 lawn mower says in was new in Nov 2012.

I have 2 Oliver 1850 diesels that use 2 6 volt batteries and I get 6 or 7 years out of the batteries before having to replace them. Anything that sets over a month gets a battery maintainer on it. Chris

Not sure what happened to the picture, it was in the box below the post, but didn't make it up here. Sticker on battery has June of 2011

on it.

Funny thing is that I've never seen any store clerk remove any of those little round tabs to tell someone when the battery was sold. I've also wondered why they ignore doing that.

There is date and plant code branded in top or top edge of lid. If sticker is missing there is still a way to get close to ship or sale/installation date.

supper99, I am a strong believer in the use of battery tenders, wish I had more of them. Would like to know what brand everyone uses and if there are any down side to using them. My farm upbringing makes it hard for me to leave anything outside in the barn or garage plugged in. I even disconnect the ground cable if using the tender/charger on a piece of my equipment. Maybe I am just being overly cautious, it is just my nature.

Our Consumer Report said that Costco batteries were the best. I have bought them and generally find them good. Their warranty is good. When one is returned they just pay you and you then go buy a new battery with a full new warranty. Some places will replace a battery but only give you what is left of the old warranty.

Too hot, too cold, too many deep discharges, too much charge and too much vibration will all shorten battery life.
Ideally a lead acid battery should not exceed 77F.

I think all but 1 of mine are from Harbor Freight, get them on sale for about $5. I've had some of them 4 or 5 years and they just keep going. Chris
