Prairie Dog Hunting

Im wanting to take my 15 year old son prairie dog hunting next year. I went to Montana about 13 years ago and shot a bunch and had a blast! I live in south east Iowa and am thinking South Dakota or Nebraska. I know that a lot of farmers will be more than willing to let guys kill them but I will be limited to only a couple of days so I would like to have a destination before we head out. Do any of you guys know of a good place or can point me in the right direction. Any help is appreciated! Thanks

Western Colorado has lots of prairie dogs.Several years ago Norwood/Nucla Colorado hosted a 'National Prairie Dog Shoot'. Drew shooters from round the world.

I have a friend who did that and wanted me to go with him again. Said I needed 5k rounds of 223 ammunition and he shot out the barrel of his rifle last time. Just what I need; to
ruin a perfectly good rifle on big rodentia.

It is so much fun! I went near Sheridan WY
near big horn mountains. Hoping to get
back out there sometime soon.

I used to go to Wood, or White River South Dakota. That will involve some Indian fees. I don't know for sure how much, as I haven't been out in about 15 years. I always took a .22 Hornet, .222 Rem, .223 Rem .22/250 Rem and a .243 Win. When one would start to get pretty hot, switch to another. A couple of good calibers for prairie dogs that I didn't have then, but I do now is the .17 Rem, and the .204 Ruger. Good luck and good hunting.

To keep this tractor related.....! Fairmont Mn used to have a
small display next to the heritage park just down from the
implement dealer with all the old Molines. Now I?ve been told
recently that the Molines are still there, but the prairie dog
park is all gone. I never quite understood why they brought
prairie dogs to Fairmont.

Huh? I don't know what your friend was doing, but he was NOT shooting prairie dogs. Not successfully, anyway.

I am a hunter but I draw the line at killing anything that I do not intend to eat or that is causing me damage to my property. I have taught my children to respect life and to live and let live. I WOULD NEVER TAKE MY CHILD TO A PLACE WHERE THEY CAN JUST KILL FOR THE FUN OF IT. No wonder we have so many crazy people just shooting others for no logical reason. Just saying!

The logical reason is; where you have prairie dogs, you have nothing else because they eat the grass so short nothing can graze there. No cows, no deer, no elk, nothing. Forgot there are usually rattlesnakes nearby.

BTDT, it is fun and sharpens your shooting skill.

You can practice on link above.

Yea I can't see just shooting animals for the 'fun' of it,I hunt game animals to eat and will kill varmints that are damaging things but to drive a lot of miles just to shoot a bunch of animals for the heck
of it seems kinds weird to me.There are a lot of bear in my area I have a chance every year to kill several but always pass as I'm not going to eat them so what'd be the point? That is unless
one came down and started messing with the livestock then I'd have to.

You surely never seen a good cow pony with broken ankle from prairie dog hole. What is happening to a great forum when few answer the question , then lambast the original poster ? Might be a long winter with all the negative crap starting before thanksgiving. Live and let live --except in the cast of the prairie dog. LOL

I knew two gentlemen that went out west ever other year prairie dog shooting. They had several ranches that they went to and
ranch owners paid for their ammo. Prairie dogs out there are a pest and multiply like flies.

Go online and type in prairie dog hunting and the state you want to hunt in. You will find places to go.

The guys I knew that went out west shooting prairie dogs said they went through a case and half of 223 ammo each in a week.

But prairie dog are causing damage to property. I?ve seen 100s of acres eaten bare by their colonies. In addition the leave huge and lots of holes sutible to break a horses leg. They are classified as rodents. Many ranchers are pleased to not have them not their property for these reasons. Therefore IMHO by your own definition, it is OK to shoot prairie dogs.

Come here and shoot as many as you can and you'll still not dent the population. Make no mistake folks they ain't a pet we call them prairie rats and the name fits.I have two dog towns within five miles of me and last year when we were dry they went looking for new homes. We shot a lot of the fuzzy little varmints on my land and luckily we kept them from establishing a new town here. They wreck the land so come and get them.

In the Marines they told me anything you hunt -- you eat . I don't think I would eat one . On a side note when my Dad was a kid in Manitoba they were paid a nickel for every prairie dog tail they turned in.5 cents was a lot of money in the 1930s.

Those things destroy farmland and they also are loaded with plague carrying fleas. Your objections to killing prairie dogs are unfounded.

So if you shot an enemy, you were expected to cannibalize? Better to join the Navy, I don't think they had that rule.

Some here object to killing something they don't eat. For that reason, I don't hunt, BUT if my property was infested with prairie dogs or wild boars, I would be blasting away.

Iirc there are some videos around with vermin burrows being charged with oxygen-propane then ignited with a ka-boom.

That is awesome!
