Rolled roofing

It?s probably been 20 years since I have put on rolled roofing. I can?t remember if your supposed to nail around the edges or just at the top of the rolled roofing and just use roof cement along the edges to hold it down anybody know. I?m finding all kinds of contradictory stuff on the Internet. I really should know this.

I never had rolled roofing last very long.
I replaced mine with a rubber roof and never had a problem.

The new stuff seems to be trash.I helped my dad do a couple,he's 82 and can't do them himself anymore.10 months later he called and told me to go look at the job.It was worse than the stuff he had taken off,and he had put that on 20-25 years ago.the guy that owned the place said if I didn't know better I would have said you didn't replace it at all.I replaced it with rubber, and have another one of his jobs gone bad I am going to replace with rubber. The EPDM rubber being used has been holding up well from what I've seen.A mobile home repair man told me he has a couple of hundred rubber roofs under his belt, and the only problems have been from accidents, and a couple by screw ups by his help.To buy it off the shelf here right now it is $200.for a 10X25 piece, and the cement runs about $190.for a 5 gallon bucket.

if you're talking about the asphalt kind - I wouldn't bother with it. I covered a roof of a large patio area with that stuff and it shrunk so much it was comical.

I over lapped everything properly, and there were still gaps. Of course never going up on that roof I had no idea it had happened until I noticed all the leaks and rotting wood. I couldn't believe how much it had shrunk.

If you do use it - be extra generous with your overlaps.

I just nailthe sides, and along the top, and a few along the seam across the roof, then along the end. I figure if a few nails do some good a lot of nails will do a lot of good.I didn't realize the new stuff was junk. Maybe from China. I have a roof with rolled roofing installed over 10 years ago. It is holding up good. I put 30 lb tar paper down first. I remember if you bought a roll of roofing back in the 50's, it came with a bag of nails, and a can of tar. I wonder when the companies stopped that practice? Stan

Better to just go with metal roofing. Gluing the bottom edge and nailing the top edge, as stated below, is the way I would install it.
