Ford 9700 locked up won't move

I am new to the forum thing, if this is already a thread please let me know where to find it.

Here's my issue. I have a 9700 with dual power I purchased relatively cheap. Used it today to put out hay and the right wheel locked up like I put on the brake. It let go and another 20' other side did the same thing. Maybe 15' both wheels locked up and tractor shut off. I can shift through all the gears and high-low-park. Tractor starts but when you let the clutch out, engine will stall. Does anyone have a clue where to start to look for what's locked up? Any help would be greatly appreciated

May be a difficult job but the very first thing, (before you damage something) is get the tractor jacked up on good blocks with both REAR wheels off the ground. Then put the tractor in neutral , try turning each back wheel and if they turn listen for noise. Try each wheel , when turn one forward if the other turn back try and hold it. After that put it in gear and mash the clutch try again to do the turning, see where it is locking up, either in rear end or transmission. Locating the problem BEFORE you go to tearing into it will make your repair easier.

If I remember right, some of the Ford's from that era suffered rear end failures
that were generally more expensive to repair than the tractor was worth. Hope yours
is not one of them.

I agree with jm. about jacking it up to try to get it narrowed down. You could check filters by cutting them open to see if there are metal pieces. Although you never hear of the differentials in them having problems, that is what it sounds like. Possibly just a shelled out bearing that has allowed spider gears to get out of line.

Hand turning the wheels is all the testing it should have. It might need to be dollied to where it can be repaired. Floating bearing parts or gear teeth will make a 500
dollar repair into scrap metal. I would not even roll it onto a trailer. A heavy lift wrecker might be the ticket. Best of luck Jim
