PTO sizes and number of splines

Educate me on the sizes and number of splines please.
I grew up with a CASE DC and SC. The pto on the SC was smaller and required an adaptor to make larger to fit everything on our farm.
Now I see pto shafts are larger and more splines. I question all of this as my tenant was talking about the differen types.
Just kind of wondering.
Wouldn?t all the variations cause some compatibility frustrations?

There was the older 1-1/8 PTO size like on the 8N Fords and others back then. Then they did a industry standard of 1-3/8. But the newer tractors can have both the 1-3/8 540 RPM PTO and also the newer fine spline 1000RPM PTO shaft

. Two sizes and splines on the 1000rpm pto’s. Introduced to cope with ever increasing HP.
In hind sight they should have went with 1800rpm instead of 1000rpm.

1 1/8 6 spline 540 RPM
1 3/8 6 spline 540 RPM
1 3/8 21 spline 1000 RPM
1 3/4 20 spline 1000 RPM

There is also a 1 3/4 6 spline, but it is very uncommon.

The 1 3/8 inch 21 spline shaft is used on tractors under 150 horsepower and the 1 3/4 inch 20 spline shaft is required on tractors rated over 150 horsepower. There are adapters to mix and match tractors to implements but one should always remember there is a good reason for the bigger shafts on higher power tractors. Big horsepower can do big damage in a big hurry.
